If you’re sold on the looks and can accept the practicality penalties of the C40, it stacks up well compared with its immediate competition, especially on performance. It’s also a refined and pleasant electric car to drive, justifying its premium billing. The regular XC40 Recharge offers similar performance and is a better all-rounder, though, so we’d recommend going for that instead.

This top-spec model adds larger 20in wheels, ambient lighting, adaptive front headlights, a 360-degree camera and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
The engineSee full engine specs
This smaller battery option (which replaces the 170kW) is coupled to a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels. It produces 235bhp and is quick enough to get the C40 from 0-62mph in 7.4sec.
