Review

If you’re sold on the looks and can accept the practicality penalties of the Volvo C40, it stacks up well compared with its immediate competition, especially on performance. It’s also a refined and pleasant electric car to drive, justifying its premium billing. Unfortunately, the regular Volvo XC40 Recharge is cheaper, and because it has the same motor and battery underneath, offers similar performance, so we’d recommend going for that instead.

The C40 comes loaded with all the equipment you get on the top model XC40 Recharge, including full electric seat adjustment, Volvo’s Pilot Assist safety suite and a stonking Harman Kardon sound system.

The C40's two motors deliver 0-62mph in just 4.7sec, which blitzes the direct competition. If all you’re after is range, there are cheaper alternatives that go further on a single charge.
