Residual values are weak because the S80 wears the wrong badge for the sector. Although the Volvo has cheaper list prices than rivals, this is cancelled out by heavy depreciation. The 170bhp 2.4 offers a reasonable company car tax rate, if you prefer petrols.
Volvo S80 quality & reliability
The Swedish manufacturer’s excellent build quality is right up there with that of the company’s German rivals, so no problems are anticipated on that score. Mechanical reliability is generally sound, although some owners have experienced trouble with the alarm and central locking.
Volvo S80 safety & security
As you would expect with Volvo, safety provisions reach the highest levels, with an array of electronic aids, including anti-lock brakes and traction control, to prevent a crash, and then seatbelts, intelligent airbags and side curtain ’bags to minimise the risk of injury. The 2.4 model scored an impressive 85% the last time we security tested it.
