Review

The Volvo V60 edges ahead of similarly-priced premium rivals thanks to its generally comfy ride, secure handling and great interior quality. And did we mention it’s blooming roomy? That's key to an estate's appeal and it's bigger on the inside than rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant. It's a great all-rounder.

This entry-level trim is the one we’d choose because it has plenty of kit. You get a 9.0in infotainment touchscreen with sat-nav, Bluetooth, a DAB radio and a 10-speaker stereo. On top of that, there's 18in alloy wheels, a 12.3in digital instrument display, adjustable lumbar support, automatic lights and wipers, cruise control, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, a power-operated tailgate, heated front seats and dual-zone climate control. Standard safety kit includes automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, oncoming lane mitigation and lane-keep assist.

The 161bhp B3 (P) can hit 0-62mph in 9.1sec. That makes it lively if you're prepared to wind it up but it's also fairly flexible for everyday driving. It comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, as all V60s do. The engine's pretty smooth and officially averages just over 40mpg.
