Review

The Volvo V60 edges ahead of similarly-priced premium rivals thanks to its generally comfy ride, secure handling and great interior quality. And did we mention it’s blooming roomy? That's key to an estate's appeal and it's bigger on the inside than rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant. It's a great all-rounder.

Over and above Momentum trim the Cross Country adds off-road styling, a 65mm raised ride height, hill descent control, standard four-wheel drive, full leather seat trim, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, wood trim, keyless entry, a gesture-controlled tailgate and ambient interior lighting.

This is the most powerful diesel engine available in the V60 range with 194bhp. It’s available with front or four-wheel drive – the latter is standard on the Cross Country. It's also a torquey engine, so it’ll be able to pull a trailer without too much effort, although not quite as swiftly as the equivalent Audi A4 Avant 40 TDI or Mercedes C220d Estate, even though its claimed 0-62mph time (7.9sec for the V60 and 8.2sec for the V60 Cross Country) is competitive. It’s a worthwhile option if you need a diesel, though, because it's RDE2 compliant and manages decent fuel efficiency, especially compared with the thirsty petrol alternative in the V60 Cross Country.
