The Volvo V60 edges ahead of similarly-priced premium rivals thanks to its generally comfy ride, secure handling and great interior quality. And did we mention it’s blooming roomy? That's key to an estate's appeal and it's bigger on the inside than rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant. It's a great all-rounder.

Over and above Momentum trim the Cross Country adds off-road styling, a 65mm raised ride height, hill descent control, standard four-wheel drive, full leather seat trim, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, wood trim, keyless entry, a gesture-controlled tailgate and ambient interior lighting.

This 2.0-litre 247bhp turbocharged petrol comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. 0-62mph takes 6.8sec and it's still capable of returning 40mpg but it's too expensive to buy for us to recommend. It's available with front- or four-wheel drive, the latter being standard on the V60 Cross Country.
