Review

It might be some time since we voted the multi-talented Volvo XC40 our Car of the Year, but it still cuts the mustard. It blends generous passenger space and a practical boot with a quality interior and top-notch safety. That means you aren't only buying a hugely desirable product, but one backed up with real substance. If you're a private buyer, we reckon the T3 petrol makes the most sense, but the T4 plug-in hybrid is a great choice for company car drivers.

Our favourite trim. This adds seats trimmed in leather and suede, power-folding door mirrors, a powered tailgate, privacy glass and multicoloured ambient interior lighting to everything you get with cheaper Momentum trim. You also get sports suspension, which delivers a better-controlled and more comfortable ride.

Has a respectable 161bhp and, particularly when combined with the optional automatic gearbox, delivers adequate performance for most family SUV buyers’ desires – 0-62mph in 9.6sec. The pick of the range for most buyers, although with a lower towing capacity than other models (1600kgs), not all.
