It might be some time since we voted the multi-talented Volvo XC40 our Car of the Year, but it still cuts the mustard. It blends generous passenger space and a practical boot with a quality interior and top-notch safety. That means you aren't only buying a hugely desirable product, but one backed up with real substance. If you're a private buyer, we reckon the T3 petrol makes the most sense, but the T4 plug-in hybrid is a great choice for company car drivers.get the best price

This model is based on the standard R-Design, but adds adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, headlight washers, a heated windscreen and 20in alloy wheels.

This 2.0-litre petrol engine packs 194bhp, so acceleration is surprisingly nippy with 0-62mph taking just 8.4sec for the front-wheel drive model. That's the best option, because it is cheaper and more fuel-efficient than the four-wheel drive version. The B4 is a good engine and well worth considering if you need a bit more oomph than the T3 provides.
