It might be some time since the multitalented XC40 won our 2018 What Car? Car of the Year award, but we reckon it still cuts the mustard. It blends generous passenger space and a very practical boot with a quality interior and a top-notch safety rating. That means you are not only buying a stylish product, but one backed up with some substance. It's a better family SUV than a BMW X1 or X2, but check out the Range Rover Evoque as well, which is the XC40’s strongest rival.

Even better-equipped, sportier-looking and still reasonably priced, R-Design is our favourite. It adds sports seats trimmed in leather and nubuck, power-folding door mirrors, privacy glass and multicolour ambient theatre lighting. It's worth adding a few options, though, such as the excellent Convenience Pack that includes keyless entry, a powered tailgate, power-folding rear seats and multiple other practicality aids, along with the Intellisafe Pro pack that adds additional safety aids and semi-autonomous driving.
Engine: 2.0 D3
The cheapest diesel engine in the lineup is also the best fit for the XC40. It's more flexible at low engine speeds than the T3, so although it's not a great deal faster you don't have to work it so hard to make progress. Plus, it returns impressive real-world fuel economy. Available with an automatic or manual gearbox, as well as front or four-wheel drive.
