The Volvo XC90 is a fine luxury SUV that combines a high quality, spacious and versatile interior with plenty of kit and top-notch safety credentials. The Audi Q7 is still a better overall package, though, and don't rule out the Land Rover Defender if you're happy with something slightly more rugged.get the best price

Inscription Pro follows the theme of adding extra luxuries on top of what you get with regular Inscription trim. Those extras include ventilated and massaging front seats, adaptive air suspension and 21in alloy wheels.

With 296bhp, this supercharged 2.0-litre petrol packs a real punch. 0-62mph takes just 6.7 seconds and it feels noticeably less strained than the B5 when packed to the hilt with people and luggage. However, to extract this performance, you do have to rev it rather hard, which feels at odds with the XC90s relaxed nature. Ultimately, the diesel is a better fit for the XC90 thanks to its extra urgency at low revs.
