Audi is a brand that sets the standard for interior quality, and this, combined with its vast and ever-growing model line-up, has helped it become one of the ‘big three’ German prestige car makers, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The A3 hatchback, A4 executive saloon and Q7 SUV are all common - yet upmarket - sights on UK roads.

At least some of Audi's success over the past 30 years can be attributed to the growth in sales of vehicles with four-wheel drive; the company arguably led the way in bringing 4x4 technology into the mainstream, with its Quattro coupé in the early 1980s.

Today, most Audis are available with at least the option of four-wheel drive, while the list of SUVs from the brand includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

AUDI

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Ford builds some of the most popular cars in the UK, including the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks.

This success is partly down to longevity and the fact that there’s a Ford dealer around every corner. However, it’s also because Fords tend to offer good value and be among the best cars in their respective classes to drive.

The company’s huge range also helps; it offers everything from the small – but surprisingly practical – Ka+ to the large and lavishly equipped Edge SUV.

Meanwhile, other highlights of the range include the S-Max and Galaxy people carriers, the Mondeo executive car and the Ranger pick-up.

FORD

Honda is a company that doesn’t like to follow the crowd. So, while it competes in most of the traditional sectors of the car market, in each case it does something a little bit different.

The Jazz, for example, might look like just another rival to Britain’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, but it’s actually much more practical than its rivals, with a flexible boot and Tardis-like interior.

The bigger Civic is also a practical choice, but it’s mainly distinguished by having eye-catching, love-it-or-hate-it styling, despite competing in a sector of the market that’s usually more conservative than a blue rosette.

And while it may not seem so radical now, Honda’s large SUV, the CR-V, was one of the first to forego any pretence of being an off-roader and instead focus on on-road driving dynamics.

HONDA

Hyundai has transformed itself from a maker of oddball hatchbacks that sold in small numbers in the UK, to a major rival to the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

The Korean firm’s Ioniq Hybrid is particularly impressive, having beaten the trend-setting Toyota Prius when we tested the cars back to back.

Meanwhile, at the extremes of the Hyundai range you find the tiny i10 city car – a four-time What Car? award winner – and the stylish yet family-friendly Santa Fe SUV.

As a bonus, all of these cars come with the reassurance of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, whereas most of Hyundai’s rivals offer only three years and 60,000 miles of cover.

HYUNDAI

If you’re in the market for a pick-up truck, chances are you’ll have heard of Isuzu. The Japanese brand makes buses and lorries for markets all over the world, but it’s most famous for the D-Max.

A rival to the Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok, the D-Max pick-up is aimed at drivers who need rugged go-anywhere ability and lots of space, and for whom a conventional SUV just won’t cut it.

ISUZU

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

Land Rover is synonymous with SUVs, and especially with the Defender – the rugged runabout that has seen service in war zones across the world, but also as part of the Queen’s personal garage.

If off-road prowess is one of Land Rover’s core values, though, the other is luxury. Indeed, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are among the best luxury SUVs you can buy.

The Discovery, meanwhile, is a practical rival for the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, while the stylish Evoque (which is available as a three-door convertible as well as a traditional SUV) goes head to head with Audi’s Q3 and BMW’s X1.

In the coming years, we’ll see a new road-biased ‘Road Rover’ as well as an all-new Defender.

LAND ROVER

In the same way that Infiniti acts as Nissan’s premium arm, Lexus has a similar tie-in with Toyota. And since most of Toyota’s models are offered as hybrids, it’s no surprise to see the same from Lexus, although there are some traditional petrol engines, too.

The brand focuses heavily on SUVs – namely the NX and RX – but also has the CT hatchback, ES executive saloon and LS luxury car among its portfolio. More small and large SUVs are expected in the future.

Like Toyota, Lexus has built a very strong reputation for reliability and regularly finishes very close to the top of our annual Reliability Survey.

LEXUS

Mazda can be summed up in a single word: bold. Not only do its cars generally look like nothing else on the market, but it’s also invested heavily in innovative engine technology.

So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.

Highlights of Mazda’s line-up include the MX-5 sports car, which has won our Convertible of the Year Award multiple times, and the CX-5 large SUV, which was named as our inaugural best car for dog owners.

MAZDA

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

MERCEDES-BENZ

While Mitsubishi sells both the Mirage hatchback and the L200 pick-up truck in the UK, the core of its range is in SUVs – handy, since this is one of the largest markets worldwide.

There’s an SUV to suit everyone, too. If you’re a company car driver, the Outlander PHEV mixes low fuel bills with a spacious interior. The ASX, meanwhile, is attractively priced against key rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai and Seat Ateca. Or, if you prefer mud to asphalt, the Shogun offers genuine off-road ability.

More SUVs are on the way, too, including one that’s rumoured to bring back the ‘Evo’ name made famous in rallying.

MITSUBISHI

Nissan turned up early to the SUV party, with its Qashqai paving the way for the countless models we see today. The Qashqai continues to sell in big numbers in the UK, too, and was also our overall Car of the Year in 2014.

Don’t think Nissan is just about SUVs, though. As well as the Qashqai, the smaller Juke and the larger X-Trail, the Japanese brand has the Micra hatchback, GT-R sports car and Navara pick-up truck.

Nissan was also one of the first big car makers to launch a fully electric car, with its latest Leaf being one of the best on the market.

Despite being based in Japan, Nissan has long committed to building cars in the UK, making several of its best-selling models at a huge factory in Sunderland.

NISSAN

Peugeot has its strongest model line-up for some years, with some of its cars now rated by our testers as being among the very best available.

Highlights focus around the firm’s newest SUVs, the 3008 and 5008. The 5008 was named Large SUV of the Year at the 2018 What Car? Awards, thanks to its appealing blend of space, interior quality and low running costs.

That bodes well for future launches, too, because many of the learnings from these cars will be passed on as new versions of existing cars are launched – something that could take many years, because the Peugeot range is so big, ranging from an entry-level supermini with the 108 to an executive saloon with the 508, up into the SUV range and also vans.

Buyers should evaluate some of the lower-rated cars in the range more carefully, though. Some are now quite old, and are subsequently left behind in terms of quality when compared with the opposition, making them below-average buys, in our estimation.

PEUGEOT

Porsche is best known as the quintessential sports car maker, but its line-up is increasingly diverse, interesting and successful, from its SUV family to the Panamera hatchback and shooting brake and, in time, a planned family of electric vehicles.

Whatever your choice, What Car?’s testers rate the cars highly; Porsche has an unusually high percentage of five and four-star cars.

Without exception, its sports cars are class leaders or among the class leaders, standing out for combining driving thrills with surprising luxury and comfort. Likewise, its SUVs are among the sharpest handling, as well as offering high levels of practicality and quality. Meanwhile, the Panamera is a true rival to the very best large executive saloons.

Porsche also sees itself as an electric car pioneer and has already enjoyed sales success with its plug-in hybrid range. Its first all-electric sports car is imminent, signalling the firm’s intent to stay relevant for many years to come.

PORSCHE

Hatchbacks, SUVs, hybrids, electric cars: Renault makes them all, in a variety of shapes and sizes, meaning&nbsp;it has a line-up designed to tempt pretty much everyone.

From the roadside, the standout feature of all its cars is design, with them instantly recognisable as members of the Renault family, without being so similar that they fall&nbsp;into the Russian doll trap. However, in terms of ability they're a mixed bag,&nbsp;ranging&nbsp;from very good to no better than average.

Models that fall into the former camp include the Clio small hatchback and Megane E-Tech electric car, while the smaller Zoe electric car is also impressive in most respects; it's just a pity Renault omits key safety kit.

On the other hand, the Captur, Arkana and Austral SUVs are all outclassed by several rivals.

Renault has some exciting new models planned, including a new Scenic (this time it will be an electric SUV instead of a conventionally powered MPV) and two cars that reimagine classic Renaults: the 4 and 5.

RENAULT

Today, the resurgent Seat brand is selling better cars than at any time in its history.

In large part, that’s because it is one of the brands owned by the VW Group. Underneath, all of the cars it sells are strongly related to similar models sold by Volkswagen itself, or the likes of Skoda and even Audi. If you are buying a Leon, for example, the hardware will be similar to that of the Golf, Octavia and A3.

But while Seat makes the most of this tie-up to offer everything from city, small and family cars, including estates, through to a full range of SUVs, it also adds in its own slice of character, both with its distinctive styling approach and because its engineers generally tune the cars to deliver sportier handling.

While all of its cars are decent, it is the SUVs that stand out. The Arona and Ateca are among the class leaders and have enjoyed triumphs at the What Car? Awards.

SEAT

One of the greatest success stories in the car world of recent decades is Skoda’s rise to become a hugely credible mainstream maker of good-value, good-sense cars.

Central to that success has been its place within the VW Group, alongside the Volkswagen brand itself, plus the likes of Seat and Audi. That has given it access to exactly the same underpinnings for its cars as the other brands, and it has complemented this by adding its own developments, from the way the cars drive and ride through to the features they have and the pricing.

The result is a range that extends from a city car to a large executive saloon, with family and large seven-seat SUVs too. There’s a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are competitive for the class.

As a result, Skoda has a range of cars that is almost entirely class-leading or among the class leaders, and it has enjoyed long-time success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

SKODA

Suzuki is well known as a motorcycle manufacturer, but the car brand has been enjoying decent success in recent years, thanks to a line-up of neat, well-equipped and keenly priced models.

Its expertise focuses on smaller cars, although its high-riding SUV range is also hugely credible, especially the Ignis and Vitara, which are both rated highly by What Car?’s testers and which have enjoyed success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

Well priced, decent to drive and full of useful tech, Suzuki’s cars also generally stand out for delivering good fuel economy. The Ignis, Celerio and Baleno have all stood head and shoulders above the competition during our True MPG testing.

SUZUKI

Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.

That process seems to be working for buyers, with the hugely popular and striking-looking C-HR SUV in particular attracting a great deal of interest. The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.

However, it’s worth noting that this period of transition is also a work in progress, and that many of the firm’s cars are still rated as being no more than average among class rivals by our testers.

TOYOTA

The VW Group famously spends more money on research and development than any rival – and as a result, perhaps it should be no surprise that our testers rate its cars so consistently highly.

The fact that many of those cars use the same underpinnings also helps, because it means that if they get it right once, they have the foundations to keep on getting it right.

However, the Volkswagen brand faces plenty of tough competition, often from within, because the rapidly rising Seat and Skoda brands that are also part of the group have access to the same technology.

VOLKSWAGEN

Volvo is now a true rival to the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, offering an alternative take on premium executive cars to a rapidly growing fanbase.

After a string of strong launches – notably with the Mk2 XC90 and XC60 SUVs – it struck gold in early 2018 when it launched its smallest SUV, the XC40. When our testers compared the car with its rivals, they concluded that it was the best launch of the previous 12 months, earning it our coveted overall Car of the Year Award.

The good news is that, like many car makers, Volvo now uses the same structure underneath most of its cars – so if they get it right on one model, it usually bodes well for the rest. That’s the case here, with Volvo’s subsequent saloon and estate launches complementing the SUVs and making for a generally extremely appealing line-up.

Not every Honda is thrilling to drive, but they are cars you can rely on to soldier on for many years without suffering many faults. Evidence of this comes from the fact that Honda is always in the top half of the annual What Car? league table of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/reliability-survey-most-reliable-cars-brands/n26159">the most reliable car brands</a>, and it's been in the top 10 for the past two years. It's not only the latest Honda models that gain high scores for reliability, either. The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/cr-v/estate/used-review/n19839">2018-2023 Honda CR-V</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/hr-v/hatchback/used-review/n17417">2015-2022 Honda Jazz</a> are both up there with newer models in the 0-5-year-old chart, and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/cr-v/estate/used-review/n790">2012-2018 CR-V</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/civic/hatchback/used-review/n773">2012-2017 Civic</a> are among the top models in the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-used-cars-for-reliability/n27280">What Car? older car reliability chart</a> for cars aged from six to 20 years old.In the latest survey, Honda has an overall rating of 96.6% and sits in fourth place. This is a slight improvement on the previous year, when it was sixth with a score of 95.9%. The brand has a low fault rate of 15% and the two main areas of concern for owners were the 12-volt battery and non-engine electrics. The car maker covered the cost of repairs in 85% of instances, and 60% of cars were back on the road in a day or less. Here we're looking at reliability data for Honda models aged up to five years old. Reliability rating 97.6%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Steering 8%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 36% less than a day, 40% more than a week</li></ul> The Honda Civic is now in its 11th generation, having been on sale in the UK since 1972. Although the latest version is only offered with one engine and one hatchback body style, it's a great option for buyers. The 2.0-litre petrol engine has mild hybrid technology to improve economy and performance, and there's plenty of room for a family of four and all their luggage. It's also a highly dependable choice. Only 8% of the cars we were told about went wrong, and all issues were resolved for free by Honda and its dealers. The only disappointment for some owners is that a large proportion of their cars were stuck in the workshop for more than a week. <h3><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/civic/hatchback/review/n82">Honda Civic review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">=1. That's because it has 'magic' rear seats, which tilt and fold up next to the back of the front seats, creating a huge load area. With a fault rate of just 12%, it's also a great bet if you want problem-free motoring. Owners told us the two most common areas of concern were the bodywork and 12-volt battery, and all faults were corrected for free by Honda. Just over half (55%) of issues were sorted out in a day or less, but nearly a quarter of cars took more than seven days to put right.  <h3><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/jazz/hatchback/review/n17343">Honda Jazz review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">3. Honda CR-V (2018-2023)</h3>

Reliability rating 97.2%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Non-engine electrics 6%, 12-volt battery 2%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 90% £0, 10% more than £1500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 40% one day or less, 20% more than a week  </li></ul>The previous-generation Honda CR-V isn't as refined or spacious inside as the latest version, but it's still a hugely practical and well-equipped <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/large-suvs/n17006">large SUV</a>. Engine options comprise a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with 171bhp or 190bhp if paired with a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/which-type-of-automatic-gearbox-should-i-buy/n17022">CVT automatic gearbox</a>, and a hybrid system combining a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor for a total power output of 181bhp. Extensive use of hybrid technology makes all of these economical considering their size. Only 11% of the  CR-Vs reported on had any problems, and these were restricted to the electrics and 12-volt battery. While most were put right for free, some owners had to pay out more than £1500 to get their cars fixed. Honda HR-V (2015-2022)</h3>

Reliability rating 97.1%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Air-con 6%, 12-volt battery 3%, exhaust 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 50% £0, 25% £51-£100, 25% £301-£500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 100% one day or less</li></ul> Versatile seating and a smart interior make the Honda HR-V an appealing secondhand buy, but it's noisy and pricer to buy than many alternatives. Engine options are limited to one turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel unit and a naturally aspirated 1.5 petrol in either 128bhp or 180bhp form. Both engines are noisy and the HR-V's ride is fairly hard.  At least it is a dependable option though: only 12% of the HR-Vs in our survey had any issues at all, and most were minor niggles with the air-con, battery or exhaust. However, in this highly competitive class, there are plenty of rivals that are better to drive, more practical and have similar price tags.The latest HR-V sits behind its predecessor in our reliability chart because its faults took longer to fix, and a quarter of them rendered the affected cars undriveable. Reliability rating 93.7%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Bodywork 29%, air-con 7%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 20% £0, 80% £1-£50  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 100% one day or less</li></ul> The third-generation Jazz follows on the tradition of both of its <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/used-reviews/make/honda">earlier versions</a> by successfully bridging the gap between the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-cars/n16997">small hatchback</a> class and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-cars/n27171">family car</a> class. This means it’s shorter than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/fiesta/hatchback/review/n106">Ford Fiesta</a>, but its boot and interior space are better than those of a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/focus/hatchback/review/n37">Ford Focus</a>. Inside, it’s incredibly spacious in both the front and back, and it’s more practical than those rivals, too.Although it has a fault rate of 38%, most of the issues were small ones with various parts of the bodywork. All problems were resolved in a day or less, and most of them were sorted at no cost to owners. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/jazz/hatchback/used-review/n17408">Used Honda Jazz review</a><hr /><h2 dir="ltr">Least reliable Honda model </h2><h3 dir="ltr">1. Honda Civic (2017-2022)</h3>

It's just at the bottom of this list because it's not as hewn-from-granite as its siblings. This version of the Civic is longer, lower and wider than the ninth-generation car, with more room between the front and rear wheels for passengers, as well as a range of new engines and a more sophisticated rear suspension. However, it's cramped in the back seats, noisy on the motorway and hampered by a fiddly infotainment system. Its fault rate of 27% is fairly high, and many of the cars that went wrong suffered with electrical issues. Although Honda covered the cost of three-quarters of repairs, some owners had to find up to £500 to get their cars fixed. Reliability Survey</a>, conducted in association with <a href="https://www.motoreasy.com/">MotorEasy</a>, we asked thousands of car owners to give us the lowdown on how reliable their car had been over the previous 24 months.First we asked them to tell us if the car had suffered a fault, and, if so, how much each problem had cost to put right and how long it had kept the car off the road. The responses for these two factors were weighted and added up for each make and model, enabling us to create a unique reliability rating for each. The latest What Car? Kia is known as a value-for-money brand that's been at the forefront of the drive to pure electric vehicles. It has built up a strong reputation for dependability with all models backed by its comprehensive seven-year warranty. Overall, Kia has a very good reputation for reliability, with owners reporting that only 20% their cars had any issues in the previous two years. It's also one of the best brands for fixing faults for free: 91% of owners didn't have to contribute to the cost of repairing faults. Mazda was 11th out of 31 <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/reliability-survey-most-reliable-cars-brands/n26159">most reliable car brands</a> in the latest <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/most-reliable-cars/n27337">What Car? Reliability Survey</a> with a score of 93.4%. Its score and place relative to other brands has slipped a little in the past year, though: in 2023 it was eighth out of 32, with a score of 93.8%. Models with strong reliability ratings include the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/picanto/hatchback/review/n58">Kia Picanto</a> small hatchback and the latest <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sportage/4x4/review/n17352">Kia Sportage</a> family SUV. However, the previous <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sportage/4x4/used-review/n17426">Sportage</a> has suffered with some serious issues, particularly in diesel form. Here we're looking at reliability data for Kia models aged up to five years old. Reliability rating 99.3%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Gearbox/clutch 6%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 100% less than a day</li></ul> This version of the Kia Picanto may no longer be on sale new, but it’s well worth considering if you're after a bulletproof city car. It's good to drive, practical considering its compact dimensions, and well equipped. The 1.25-litre petrol engine is our pick of the line-up and we'd go for mid-range 2 trim to get useful features, such as air-con and Bluetooth connectivity. Whichever version you choose, your Picanto should be reliable. Owners told us that a mere 6% of examples aged up to five years old had any issues, and the only area to give any grief was the gearbox/clutch. Reliability rating 96.4%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Non-engine electrics 4%, interior trim 4%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 33% one day or less, 55% more than a week  </li></ul>The 2016-2022 Kia Niro looks rather conventional, so it will appeal to buyers who want to drive a hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car but don’t want to stand out from the crowd. It's pretty innovative under the skin, though. The hybrid can achieve up to 58.9mpg officially and can run for up to 38 miles on pure electric power. According to our survey data, only 13% of Niro models had any issues and many of these were minor faults with the trim or electrics that were sorted out at no cost to owners. Reliability rating 96.0%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Sat-nav/infotainment system 7%, bodywork 5%, exhaust 3%, non-engine electrics 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 42% one day or less, 42% more than a week  </li></ul>The current Sportage has a lot of rivals in the packed family SUV class, including the closely related <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/tucson/4x4/review/n103">Hyundai Tucson</a>, plus the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/kuga/4x4/review/n57">Ford Kuga</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/qashqai/hatchback/review/n7">Nissan Qashqai</a>, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/renault/austral/estate/review/n25066">Renault Austral</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/seat/ateca/estate/review/n111">Seat Ateca</a>. It beats the Tucson on price and driving enjoyment, and it's roomier for passengers and luggage than most competitors. With a low fault rate of 15%, it's a safe bet if you're after a reliable car, too. The infotainment system was the biggest niggle for owners, followed by bodywork problems. Kia's long warranty covered the cost of all repairs, and many cars were in and out of the dealership in a day or less. Kia XCeed (2019-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 95.6%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Bodywork 14%, 12-volt battery 3%, sat-nav/infotainment 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 67% £0, 33% £51-£200  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 33% one day or less, 67% more than a week</li></ul> The XCeed is based on the same underpinnings as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ceed/hatchback/review/n17863">Kia Ceed</a> hatchback, but it's slightly longer and sits higher on the road with chunkier SUV-esque styling. All versions come with plenty of kit and it's practical with a good-sized boot, but the Ceed is more affordable.  Issues with the bodywork were the most common complaint from the 21% of XCeed owners who told us their cars had gone wrong. The good news is that two-thirds of cars were fixed for free, the less good news is that the same proportion were out of action for more than a week. <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/xceed/hatchback/review/n20081">Kia XCeed review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">5. Kia EV6 (2021-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.9%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: 12-volt battery 6%, non-motor electrics 6%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 19% one day or less, 73% more than a week  </li></ul>The EV6 has some impressive claims: it can charge faster than a Tesla, go further between charges than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a> and, as long as you choose the right version, it will out-accelerate a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/taycan/saloon/review/n20184">Porsche Taycan</a> 4S. No wonder, then, that we crowned it our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/awards/new-car-awards">Car of the Year</a> in 2022.It's proving a pretty dependable <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric car</a> option, too. Owners told us that only 13% of their EV6s had any problems, most with electrical issues. With all affected cars still under warranty, all remedial work was done for free. The only disappointment for owners is that the majority of cars took more than a week to fix.    <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6 review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">6. Kia Ceed (2018-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.8%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Engine 10%, gearbox/clutch 5%, interior trim 5%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 25% one day or less, 75% more than a week</li></ul> On paper, the Kia Ceed looks good, offering a long warranty, competitive pricing and plenty of standard equipment. However, it's outclassed by the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-cars/n16996">best family cars</a>, including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/focus/hatchback/review/n37">Ford Focus</a> and Seat Leon, which are more rewarding to drive, and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/octavia/hatchback/review/n39">Skoda Octavia</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/scala/hatchback/review/n19190">Scala</a>, which are more practical. Only one in five of the Ceeds we were told about had any difficulties, with the engine causing the most concern. Even though some were outside Kia's seven-year new car warranty, the car maker covered the cost of all necessary repairs. However, putting things right was often slow – three-quarters of affected cars were in the garage for more than seven days.      <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ceed/hatchback/review/n17863">Kia Ceed review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">7. Kia E-Niro (2019-2022)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.4%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Bodywork 5%, non-motor electrics 4%, 12-volt battery 3%, EV battery pack 3%, brakes 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 82% £0, 6% £751-£1000  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 56% one day or less, 39% more than a week</li></ul> The e-Niro is an unassuming-looking model, but it was remarkable when it went on sale because it was one of the first pure <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric cars </a>that was reasonably priced and had a long range. The 64kWh battery version achieved 253 miles in What Car's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/range-test-how-far-can-electric-cars-really-go/n24836">Real Range tests.</a>It has fewer faults than its replacement, the Niro EV: the e-Niro has a fault rate of 19% compared with the Niro EV's 38%, and e-Niro owners' main concerns were with bodywork flaws. Kia paid for the repairs in 82% of instances, and most owners had bills of less than £200, aside from an unlucky 6% who paid up to £1000. More than half of the affected cars were sorted out in a day or less.   <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/e-niro/estate/used-review/n22663">Used Kia e-Niro buying guide</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">8. Kia Sportage petrol (2016-2021)</h3>

Reliability rating 93.4%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Brakes 10%, bodywork 5%, gearbox/clutch 5%, non-engine electrics 5%, suspension 5%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 17% one day or less, 67% more than a week</li></ul> The Sportage is an important car in the Kia line-up because it's the brand's top seller, and also one of the UK's most popular SUVs. There were two petrol engine options on pre-2018 models: a 128bhp 1.6-litre unit and a more powerful 174bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre engine. The latter is better at hauling a family and all their luggage around. If you're after a secondhand Sportage, we'd recommend a petrol version because it has far fewer issues than the diesels: 20% of petrol Sportages went wrong compared with 56% of diesels. Kia took care of the cost of all remedial work on petrol models, but two-thirds of cars with faults were in the workshop for more than a week. <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sportage/4x4/used-review/n17426">Used Kia Sportage buying guide</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">9. Kia Sorento (2020-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 92.1%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Non-engine electrics 19%, 12-volt battery 6%, bodywork 6%, engine electrics 6%, interior trim 6%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 50% one day or less, 25% more than a week</li></ul> A brilliant seven-seat SUV, the Sorento is hugely practical and well equipped with a massive boot. It comes in <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-hybrid-cars-you-dont-have-to-plug-in/n17700">hybrid</a> and as a PHEV that can cover up to 34 miles on pure electric power. It's big and boxy, so handling is restrained rather than sporty, but the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/plug-in-hybrid-cars/n22743">PHEV</a> will do the 0-62mph sprint in 8.8sec.  Nearly a third (31%) of the Sorentos in our survey went wrong, most suffering electrical issues. Reliability rating 66.2%<ul><li>Most common faults Engine 24%, gearbox/clutch 20%, non-engine electrics 16%, brakes 8%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 83% £0, 8% more than £1500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 17% less than a day, 51% more than a week  </li></ul>The used Sportage is a strong contender in the used car market because it's attractively styled and inexpensive to buy, and it has a spacious and practical interior. At launch three diesel engine options were available: a 114bhp 1.7-litre (the best seller in the range), and a 2.0-litre with 134bhp or 182bhp. A new 1.6-litre diesel, in 114bhp and 134bhp forms, replaced the 1.7 in 2018, and some diesel models gained 48V <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/what-is-a-mild-hybrid-and-should-you-buy-one/n22776">mild-hybrid</a> tech to improve fuel efficiency a year later.Diesels have proved far less dependable than their petrol counterparts: 56% went wrong compared with 20% of petrols. Worryingly, nearly a quarter of problems were with the engine, and 20% were with the gearbox. Like its predecessor, the e-Niro, it has an impressive range – you can expect it to cover more than 250 miles in real-world driving before it'll need to be charged up. However, the e-Niro replacement isn't proving as sturdy as its predecessor: 38% of Niro EVs had a glitch, many with electrical woes. Japanese brand, Mazda, is renowned for being innovative. Past highlights include the rotary-engined RX8 sports car, and in recent years it's pursued a strategy of efficient petrol engines that, unlike many rivals, aren't turbocharged.  In general, Mazda has a good reputation for reliability, with owners reporting that only around a quarter of their cars had any issues in the previous two years. It's also pretty good at covering the cost of fixing those faults: 83% of remedial work was done for free. Mazda was 16th out of 31 <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/reliability-survey-most-reliable-cars-brands/n26159">most reliable car brands</a> in the latest <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/most-reliable-cars/n27337">What Car? Reliability Survey</a> with a score of 91.1%, which puts it in the middle of the chart for dependability. Its score and place relative to other brands has slipped a little in the past couple of years: it was 13th out of 32, with a score of  92.8%, in 2023. Models with strong reliability ratings include the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/2/hatchback/review/n95">Mazda 2</a> small hatchback and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/cx-5/estate/review/n19">CX-5</a> family SUV, especially in petrol form. In contrast, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/cx-60/4x4/review/n24505">CX-60</a> has suffered with a high proportion of issues. Here we're looking at reliability data for Mazda models aged up to five years old. Reliability rating 96.8%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: 12-volt battery 7%, non-engine electrics 7%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 50% £0, 50% £101-£200  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 100% less than a day</li></ul> The Mazda 2 is a small petrol-engined hatchback that rivals the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/i20/hatchback/review/n53">Hyundai i20</a>, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/fabia/hatchback/review/n47">Skoda Fabia</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/polo/hatchback/review/n83">VW Polo</a>. As a used option, it's up against the former best-selling <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/fiesta/hatchback/used-review/n952">Ford Fiesta</a>. It has a reasonably plush interior, economical mild-hybrid engines and even the entry-level model is very well equipped, too. However, it's not as much fun to drive as a Fiesta and not as refined as some other rivals. One big thing in its favour is its strong reliability record. Owners told us that only 14% of their Mazda 2s went wrong, and all faulty cars remained driveable — indicating that the issues weren't too serious — and all of them were fixed in a day or less. Reliability rating 96.1%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Sat-nav/infotainment 10%, bodywork 7%, non-engine electrics 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 87% £0, 13% £50-£100  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 67% one day or less, 13% more than a week  </li></ul>The CX-5 is good to drive, and while it doesn’t have a premium-brand badge on its nose, its interior feels more upmarket than many rivals at the value end of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-suvs/n17116">family SUV class</a>. It's also practical and well-priced. However, if you're considering a CX-5, you may be best off with a petrol version rather than a diesel. That's because only 17% of the petrol versions we were told about suffered a fault compared with 48% of diesels.  The sat-nav/infotainment system was the main concern for petrol CX-5 owners, followed by glitches with the bodywork. Mazda CX-30 (2020-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 93.4%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: 12-volt battery 13%, air-con 4%, engine electrics 2%, non-engine electrics 2%, sat-nav/infotainment system 2%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 91% £0, 5% £1000-£1500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 46% one day or less, 40% more than a week  </li></ul>The CX-30 is an appealing <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-suvs/n17050">small SUV</a> based on the same <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/what-is-a-car-platform-and-chassis/n27195">platform</a> underpinnings as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/3/hatchback/review/n35">Mazda 3</a> hatchback. It has a high-end interior, generous equipment levels and efficient engines, but it doesn't ride as well as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/t-roc/hatchback/review/n17376">Volkswagen T-Roc</a> and isn't as much fun to drive as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/puma/hatchback/review/n20838">Ford Puma</a>. It is a pretty dependable option, though. Only 17% of the cars we were told about had any problems, and most were fixed for free by Mazda and its dealers. The most common complaint centred on the 12-volt battery, but more than two-thirds of faulty cars could still be driven. Mazda 6 (2013-2022)</h3>

Its diesel engine is quiet and smooth, and it offers impressive fuel economy. It also has an excellent <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-car-infotainment-systems-tested-and-rated/n21269">infotainment system</a> that has large, bright icons and is quick to respond. It's not all good news, though, because the Mazda 6's fault rate of 35% is on the high side. That said, minor bodywork issues were the most common complaint, and overall, two-thirds of problems were resolved in a day or less. Although it's not as expensive as more premium <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/sports-cars/n24412">sports cars</a>, it has free-revving engines, a sweet gearbox and nimble handling.The MX-5 is only a mid-league player when it comes to reliability, though. Owners told us 21% of their cars had gone wrong with a range of faults, including electrical issues and problems with the 12-volt battery. While repairs were reasonably swift — all cars were fixed in less than a week — they weren't all done for free. Its 182bhp 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D pulls harder than the petrols from around 1500rpm and it revs out freely all the way to the red line.However, with a fault rate of 48%, you could be spending more time than you'd like getting your car fixed. The exhaust system and various electrical components were the most common bugbears, but there were also issues reported with the bodywork, brakes and engine. It's the first Mazda model to be offered as a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/plug-in-hybrid-cars/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a> (PHEV), making it a rival to the PHEV <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/rav4/4x4/review/n130">Toyota RAV4</a>, as well as more expensive models, including PHEV versions of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q5/4x4/review/n41">Audi Q5</a>, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x3/4x4/review/n42">BMW X3</a> and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/lexus/nx/estate/review/n132">Lexus NX</a>.It's also unusual among Mazda models because it has a very high fault rate: 62% of the cars reported on in our survey went wrong, with the suspension, steering and electrics all giving cause for concern. Reliability rating 85.4%<ul><li>Most common faults Non-engine electrics 11%, 12-volt battery 8%, bodywork 8%, engine 8%, engine electrics 8%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 65% £0, 18% £501-£750  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 30% one day or less, 48% more than a week</li></ul> The Mazda 3 has standout looks and comes with a choice of two two large naturally aspirated – but <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/what-is-a-mild-hybrid-and-should-you-buy-one/n22776">mild-hybrid</a> – petrol engines, instead of the small turbocharged units found in rivals such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/focus/hatchback/review/n37">Ford Focus</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/golf/hatchback/review/n17371">Volkswagen Golf</a>. It's very well equipped, the infotainment system is great and, the interior quality is top-notch. With a fault rate of 33%, though, it's not the last word in dependability. Electrical issues were the main headache for owners, and faults kept nearly half of cars off the road for more than a week. Reliability Survey</a> it sits in 13th place, above <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> (18th), <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/audi">Audi</a> (24th) and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/seat">Seat</a> (26th). Like other VW Group models, it has suffered with problems with infotainment systems and other electrical components, and that means older, previous generation models, such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/octavia/hatchback/used-review/n851">2013-2020 Skoda Octavia</a> are rated higher than the latest versions. Here we're looking at reliability data for Skoda models aged up to five years old. Where models are available in more than one body style, such as hatchback and estate, our data covers all versions. Reliability rating 99.3%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Fuel system 6%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 100% less than a day</li></ul> The Octavia is the best-selling Skoda model around the world. Its popularity is buoyed by the fact that it's cheap to buy and run, well-equipped and more practical than rivals such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a3/hatchback/review/n77">Audi A3</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/golf/hatchback/review/n17371">VW Golf</a>. Add to that a choice of frugal but punchy petrol and diesel engines, and it's easy to appreciate its appeal. Petrol versions of the previous-generation Octavia are the ones to go for if you're after a dependable family hatchback because they gain a near-perfect reliability rating. This makes them a much better bet than the latest version (see below), with just 6% suffering any glitches. All issues were inconsequential, too, because they didn’t cause any breakdowns and were put right in less than a day. Skoda Karoq petrol (2017-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 96.7%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Non-engine electrics 5%, sat-nav/infotainment 4%, bodywork 2%, suspension 2%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 88% £0, 8% £101-£500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 64% one day or less, 16% more than a week</li></ul> The Karoq is Skoda’s family SUV and it sits in the same class as the ever-popular <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/qashqai/hatchback/review/n7">Nissan Qashqai</a>. Outside, it looks every inch the modern Skoda, but under the skin it shares a lot of mechanicals with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/seat/ateca/estate/review/n111">Seat Ateca</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/tiguan/estate/review/n17357">VW Tiguan</a>. That includes our favourite 1.5 TSI petrol engine, which has strong acceleration and good fuel economy. Petrol-engined Karoq models gain a 10% higher reliability rating than their diesel counterparts. They have a 15% fault rate, compared with 30% for the diesels. Even more importantly, 88% of petrol Karoqs were fixed for free, compared with only 43% of diesels. Skoda Kodiaq diesel (2017-2024)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.7%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Exhaust 6%, non-engine electrics 6%, air-con 2%, brakes 2%, engine 2%, interior trim 2%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 73% £0, 18% £301-£500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 46% one day or less, 18% more than a week</li></ul> Pick a diesel Kodiaq rather than a petrol model if you're after a dependable seven-seat SUV. There are two diesel engines to choose from: the 148bhp 2.0 TDI 150, which is gutsy enough to haul around seven people with little drama, and the 2.0 TDI 190, which has a fair bit more poke.Whichever you choose, it should prove fairly robust; diesel Kodiaqs had a fault rate of 20% and exhaust and non-engine electrical issues were the most common bugbears. Almost three-quarters of cars that went wrong were fixed gratis, and around half were in and out of the garage in a day or less. Skoda Enyaq (2021-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.2%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Non-motor electrics 16%, sat-nav/infotainment 5%, battery pack 4%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 39% one day or less, 28% more than a week</li></ul> The Enyaq is a fairly big <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-suvs/n17116">family SUV</a> (about the same size as an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q5/4x4/review/n41">Audi Q5</a>) that offers plenty of room for a family of five without breaking the bank. It comes with a choice of two battery sizes: 60 and 80. We prefer the latter because it has an impressive official range of up to 359 miles between charges.The electric Skoda SUV isn't perfect when it comes to reliability, though. Owners told us 29% of their cars had some sort of issue, mostly with the electrics. However, Skoda covered the cost of all remedial work, and most cars were fixed and back on the road in less than a week. <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/enyaq/4x4/review/n22909">Skoda Enyaq review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">5. Skoda Superb diesel (2014-2024)</h3>

Reliability rating 92.9%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Engine 6%, exhaust 6%, suspension 6%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 67% £0, 33% £201-£300  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 33% one day or less, 67% more than a week  </li></ul>Even though Skoda Superb is not as upmarket as executive car rivals, such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a6/saloon/review/n61">Audi A6</a>, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/5-series/saloon/review/n63">BMW 5 Series</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/e-class/saloon/review/n17174">Mercedes E-Class</a>, it's still a compelling choice because it is trimmed in high-quality materials, boasts a vast interior and boot and is exceptionally good value for money. The 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesel-engined models were the biggest sellers when new, so there are plenty of examples to choose from on the used market. Although the diesel Superb has a fairly low fault rate of 13%, some cars were fairly costly and slow to repair, and that's why it sits below the Enyaq in fifth place in the Skoda brand chart. Skoda Kamiq (2019-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 92.7%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: sat-nav/infotainment system 17%, engine 5%, bodywork 3%, fuel system 3%, non-engine electrics 3%, suspension 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 100% £0  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 30% one day or less, 35% more than a week</li></ul> Skoda's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-suvs/n17050">small SUV</a> is a great all-rounder with a big boot, lots of rear space and a competitive price. It’s bigger, classier inside and more comfortable than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/seat/arona/hatchback/review/n117">Seat Arona</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/t-cross/estate/review/n19039">Volkswagen T-Cross</a>, but not as nimble as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/puma/hatchback/review/n20838">Ford Puma</a>. A mid-life facelift in 2023 gave it plusher interior trim and upgraded technology. Although owners told us that 35% of their Kamiqs had a fault, most of the affected cars could still be driven and all were fixed for free by Skoda and its dealers. Skoda Kodiaq petrol (2017-2024)</h3>

Reliability rating 91.8%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Non-engine electrics 10%, sat-nav/infotainment system 10%, brakes 7%, bodywork 3%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 63% £0, 25% £301-£500, 13% more than £1500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 67% one day or less, 22% one day to a week</li></ul> The Kodiaq was the Czech firm’s first <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-large-suvs-2022/n17006">large SUV</a> and its first seven-seater. It has a classy, spacious interior and smooth, quiet engines. Petrol options start with the entry-level 1.4 TSI 125, which copes reasonably well around town, but the 1.4 TSI 150 is a better bet if you intend to drive long distances or frequently travel fully loaded. In 2018, the 1.4 engine was replaced by a 1.5 TSI 150 engine with lower emissions and similarly eager performance.Petrol-engined Kodiaqs aren't quite as dependable as the diesels, and went wrong a little more often: they have a 23% fault rate, compared with 20% for the diesels. However, all the petrol examples that did go wrong remained driveable, and 67% were put right in a day or less. Skoda Scala (2019-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 90.5%<ul dir="ltr"><li>Most common faults: Sat-nav/infotainment system 15%, brakes 10%, air-con 5%, bodywork 5%, exhaust 5%, interior trim 5%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 90% £0, 10% £301-£500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 80% one day or less, 20% more than a week  </li></ul>The Scala may be less well-known as its Volkswagen Group sibling, the Golf, but it shouldn't be overlooked because it's roomier and better value to buy. Its handling isn't as sharp as a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/focus/hatchback/review/n37">Ford Focus</a> or <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/seat/leon/hatchback/review/n89">Seat Leon</a>, but its ride is more forgiving over potholes, and if you pick the 1.5 TSI petrol engine it has pretty punchy performance. The Scala was troubled by the same infotainment glitches as other Volkswagen Group models, and overall 35% of owners told us their cars had suffered a problem. Skoda Fabia (2015-2021)</h3>

Reliability rating 89.1%Most common faults: Gearbox/clutch 25%, air-con 13%, Average repair cost: 57% £0, 8% 29% £101-£200 Typical time off road: 33% one day to a week, 67% more than a weekThe Fabia has been an extremely popular model with more than 4.9 million sold since its original launch in 1999. This third-generation version is a previous <a href="http://www.whatcar.com/awards/">What Car? Car of the Year winner</a>, and it was our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/used-car-of-the-year-awards-2021-small-cars/n22016">Used Small Car of the Year 2021.</a>It's not the most robust Skoda model, though: owners told us that 38% of their Fabias had gone wrong, many with gearbox/clutch issues. While Skoda covered the cost of more than half of repairs, that left some owners with bill of up to £200 per fault. Reliability rating 80.3%<ul><li>Most common faults Sat-nav/infotainment system 29%, non-engine electrics 23%, air-con 10% bodywork 10%, interior trim 7%  </li> <li>Average repair cost: 97% £0, 3% £201-£500  </li> <li>Typical time off road: 20% less than a day, 52% more than a week  </li></ul>The current Octavia is a great all-rounder, offering peppy performance and good economy from its range of petrol and diesel engines, and a well-appointed and roomy interior. The 1.5-litre TSI 150 petrol engine with well-equipped SE L trim is our pick of the range.However, like many other Volkswagen Group models it has suffered with a high percentage of electrical issues that have sometimes been slow to remedy. We were told that 36% of cars had a problem, and more than half of them were in the workshop for more than a week. It's also better equipped than most rivals, and it rides and handles well, even if it's not the last word in dealing with twisty country lanes.Unfortunately, petrol versions have a low reliability rating because they go wrong fairly often and they can be slow and costly to put right. Overall, 35% of the cars reported on in our survey had a glitch, with various electrical systems and the bodywork the main culprits. It has a composed ride around town and at motorway speeds, and its handling is s good balance between sportiness and comfort. There's only one diesel option, the 2.0 TDI 150. It comes with four-wheel drive and has plenty of oomph at low revs and up to motorway speeds. In fact, its 0-62mph time of 8.7sec makes it the second fastest Karoq in the range. Diesel versions of the Karoq are far more likely to go wrong than petrols, though. They have a fault rate of 30%, according to our survey respondents. Reliability Survey</a>, conducted in association with <a href="https://www.motoreasy.com/">MotorEasy</a>, we asked thousands of car owners to give us the lowdown on how reliable their car had been over the previous 24 months.First we asked them to tell us if the car had suffered a fault, and, if so, how much each problem had cost to put right and how long it had kept the car off the road. The responses for these two factors were weighted and added up for each make and model, enabling us to create a unique reliability rating for each. The latest What Car?
