  • Jaguar XE Saloon

There are certainly bigger executive saloons available for similar money, but none handles as sweetly as the Jaguar XE. It’s also good value as a company car and has strong resale values, so is a fine choice.

    From £26,995
  • Mazda 2 Hatchback

The Mazda 2 is one of the better options in the supermini class; it’s more fun to drive than most rivals and is pretty easy to live with. There are better all-rounders, though.

    From £11,995
  • Ford Mondeo Hatchback

The Ford Mondeo is good to drive and has lots of space inside. Go for the good-value and efficient 1.6-litre diesel version and you’ll have an excellent family car.

    From £20,795
  • Ford Mondeo Estate

The Ford Mondeo Estate is a superb family car. It has loads of space inside, a smooth ride, taut body control and impressive refinement. It’s also good value and the 1.6-litre diesel version is a seriously tax-efficient choice.

    From £22,045
