The MG HS isn't a reliable car, according to the What Car? Reliability Survey. Out of 76 family SUVs, the PHEV finished in 44th place and the petrol in 61st. That's pretty poor, finishing below the Citroën C5 Aircross, Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-5.
As a brand, MG did even worse. It finished in last place out of 30 manufacturers, placing it below all of its rivals.
MG HS reliability: the owners' view
According to our reliability survey, owners said the MG HS (2019-2024) presents a challenging ownership proposition. While the lengthy seven-year warranty offers initial peace of mind, many owners found themselves relying on it far too often.
Reliability trends highlight frequent electronic glitches, particularly with the infotainment system and its frequently crashing software. Mechanical issues were also reported, including noisy clutch release bearings and premature wear on rear brake discs. More concerning were reports of battery drain issues and central locking failures.
Owner interactions with the dealer network were largely disappointing. Common complaints centred on "atrocious" customer service, with owners facing three-week wait times for diagnostic appointments. The lack of available courtesy cars and poor communication from staff further frustrated owners. Despite the brand's value-driven appeal, the frequency of repairs and underwhelming dealer support left several owners advising others to avoid the model.
