4. Ford Focus 2011-2018
Aside from having a boot that’s a little on the small side, the Ford Focus is a great family car that steers, stops and goes in a far more engaging way than many sports cars can manage. Many of the huge number sold will be powered by one of the highly efficient diesel engines available, but we prefer the 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol for its charming three-cylinder character, along with reasonable fuel economy and surprising performance.

You can’t argue with our third most popular used review, being as it is the most popular used car choice according to the SMMT. Parts and servicing are generally inexpensive, and reliability is stellar considering the vast number sold. But that’s not all, because the Fiesta is a great car to drive, not just for a small car, but in its own right. Mid-range Zetec trim was fitted with all the equipment you’d need, including the heated windscreen that's highly handy on frosty mornings.

2. Land Rover Freelander 2006-2014
This is another intriguing name on our list: an SUV that has been superseded by two newer models, the rakish Range Rover Evoque and the more practical Land Rover Discovery Sport, both of which have proven immensely popular. The Freelander might be older, but there’s more than a hint of baby Range Rover about it, which explains the appeal it has among used buyers looking for a bargain premium SUV.
