What should I look for in a used Toyota BZ4X hatchback?
When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.
As with all cars, check for bodywork damage and scuffs on the alloy wheels. It's worth inspecting the interior for signs of wear and tear, too.

What are the most common problems with a used Toyota BZ4X hatchback?
At the time of writing, the bZ4X has a couple of recalls to its name. To find out whether they have been carried out, you can contact your local Toyota dealer. You will not need to pay for anything involving the recall.
Reason for recall
On affected vehicles due to a programming error there is a possibility that a multi-information display used for warning and indicator lights (on the vehicle gauges) will become blank and will not display certain warnings and indicators. As a result other functions such as turn signal lamps, hazard lights and the Pre-Collision System will be deactivated and the vehicle may not meet certain regulations. Driving without these functions may result in an increased risk of a crash in certain driving conditions.
How the manufacturer will repair: Reprogram the multi-information display electronic control unit (ECU) with modified software.
Number of affected vehicles: 2289
Date of recall: 18/12/2023
Reason for recall
Due to the programming of the forward recognition camera software, there is a possibility that the memory inside the forward recognition camera could fail during processing when the ignition is turned off. If this occurs the PCS will not activate on the next ignition start causing warning lights to illuminate audible chimes to sound and messages to display on the instrument panel.
How the manufacturer will repair: Reprogram the forward recognition camera.
Number of affected vehicles: 7150
Date of recall: 05/08/2024

Is a used Toyota BZ4X hatchback reliable?
The bZ4X had too few respondents to feature in the latest What Car? Reliability Survey. As a car brand, though, Toyota has a good reputation for reliability. In the 2024 survey, it placed fifth out of 31 manufacturers, which is above Ford, Kia, Skoda and VW. Only Honda, Suzuki, Lexus and Mini scored better.
