Used MG ZS EV 2019-2025 reliability review

The MG ZS EV is a practical and well-equipped electric SUV that's less expensive than most rivals. Reliability is a concern, though.

What should I look for in a used MG MG ZS?

What are the most common problems with a used MG MG ZS?

When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.

MG provides the full array of cables (including a slow-charge, three-pin lead) with every ZS EV. Make sure they are all supplied with the car because they can be quite expensive to replace.

Other than that, you should do all the regular used car checks, such as seeing whether there's any damage to the bumpers and bodywork, examining the alloy wheels for extensive kerb damage, and making sure the interior hasn't been trashed by family life.

Is a used MG MG ZS reliable?

The ZS EV is not a reliable car, according to the latest What Car? Reliability Survey. It finished in 24th place out of 27 cars in the electric SUV category, with a disappointing score of 81.8%. This puts it above the Nissan Ariya and Volkswagen ID 4, but below the Hyundai Kona Electric, Skoda Enyaq and Tesla Model Y.

As a car brand, MG did even worse. It finished in last place out of 30 manufacturers, falling behind all of its rivals with a score of 88.9%.

Used MG ZS EV: owners' reliability data

In our latest reliability survey, owners said the ZS EV is a mixed bag for long-term dependability. While many owners appreciate the car’s initial value, a significant number have reported frustrating electrical faults and software glitches. Common issues identified include random warning lights, infotainment screens that freeze or reboot mid-journey, and occasional faults with the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The dealer experience also drew criticism from several owners. While MG’s seven-year warranty provides some peace of mind, owners reported long wait times for repairs – sometimes up to three weeks for a diagnostic appointment. Some also found the warranty terms misleading, with certain components failing early and being deemed "wear and tear." Additionally, while some dealerships were praised for their helpful sales staff, others were described as having "atrocious" customer service, particularly when handling complex electrical repairs or providing replacement vehicles.
