What should I look for in a used Renault MEGANE E-TECH hatchback?

When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.

Most versions of the Renault Megane have large alloy wheels, so check them for any signs of damage. Likewise, have a look around the bodywork for any scuffs or scraps. Be sure to check the car's electrics are working properly, too.

We always recommend taking a used car for a test drive, but this could prove particularly useful with the Megane. Owner reviews in our reliability survey highlighted knocking noises from the suspension, so make sure the car drives smoothly and quietly over any bumps or potholes.

How the manufacturer will repair: Replacement of the electric traction reducer parking brake mechanism actuator or gearbox engagement actuator.

Number of affected vehicles: 23

Date of recall: 09/09/2025

Is a used Renault MEGANE E-TECH hatchback reliable?

The Megane finished in eighth place out of 20 electric cars in our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, which is better than the Cupra Born, MG4 and VW ID 3, but worse than the BMW i4.

As a manufacturer, Renault came in 20th place out of 30 manufacturers, which doesn’t inspire confidence. While that's better than MG and Volkswagen, it’s worse than BMW, Cupra, Kia and Tesla.

Used Renault Megane reliability: the owners’ view

In our latest reliability survey, Renault Megane owners said that while the car has some appeal, its early reliability track record is a major concern, often compounded by frustrating experiences with the dealer network.

Owners frequently report significant and repetitive faults, including a persistent issue with a knocking noise from the rear suspension that, in some cases, a dealer identified as a known manufacturing fault with "no fix" available. Another serious, recurring problem is water ingress, which has led to soaking carpets, foul odours and required extensive repairs, including replacing internal carpets and sealing wheel arches – an issue that some readers claim Renault was aware of at the point of sale.

Dealer service quality appears inconsistent, with reports of lengthy waits for parts and a general lack of clarity regarding software updates and known issues. One reader experienced a complete drive motor failure shortly after purchase, which involved a comedy of errors with recovery and an extended wait for parts. Some electrical issues, such as auxiliary battery faults, have been resolved with a replacement, but the overall picture suggests a troubled start for the Megane.
