New Fiat Topolino Dolcevita adds open-top thrills to urban quadricycle

Fiat’s smallest model is clinging onto the summer weather with a new soft-top variant

Summer might be over, but Fiat is already preparing for the sunshine to roll back around again with an all new soft-top variant of its city quadricycle: meet the Fiat Topolino Dolcevita.

With a name meaning ‘sweet life’, the Topolino Dolcevita is inspired by a quintessentially Italian way of living, which includes a focus on small pleasures and relaxation. You could argue the Topolino is already well suited to that lifestyle; its dinky proportions make it an ideal urban runabout, and its top speed of 28mph limits your journeys from becoming anything but relaxing.

When it was first introduced, only special editions of the Topolino could be had with a retractable canvas roof, but now it’s available across the wider range as an optional extra.

The Topolino shares its underpinnings with its Stellantis sibling, the Citroën Ami, meaning it’s fully electric and powered by a tiny 5.5kWh (total capacity) battery. With that juice, it can officially manage up to 46 miles on a single charge.

Both the Topolino and Ami are technically classed as quadricycles – not cars – meaning they’re powered by a modest 8bhp electric motor and are limited to 28mph. This also means you only need to hold an AM moped licence (which you can get as young as age 16) to be able to drive one.

With a turning circle of just 7.2m, the Topolino is well suited to city streets and is designed as an alternative to traditional cars for short urban journeys.

You’ll fork out £9495 for a new Fiat Topolino Dolcevita, which is £500 more than the regular Topolino. The Citroën Ami, meanwhile, is a cheaper alternative, at £7695 – but you can’t have that one with a retractable roof.
