Thinking of buying a compact MPV? Don’t sign that cheque just yet. Not only does Vauxhall launch its second-generation Zafira in July, Mazda’s new 5 arrives in September.
The early signs are that the Mazda could more than hold its own against the Vauxhall. Both cars feature seven seats and, unlike most MPVs, there’s no need to take the seats out if you want extra luggage space. Simply fold the rearmost chairs into the floor.
The 5 doesn’t slavishly follow the Zafira’s lead, however. The Mazda’s sliding rear doors make it easier for passengers to get in and out in tight parking spaces and, if anything, the Mazda’s clever seats perform even more tricks than the Vauxhall’s. Our early drive of the 5 suggests it has fine ride and handling to back up its practicality.
