The car is based on a new platform that was designed to underpin models from GM affiliates all around the world, from the Chevrolet Cruze (saloon) and Orlando (MPV) to a small Saab and even the electrically-powered Vauxhall/Opel
Ampera and their US cousin, the
Chevy Volt.
That platform gives the new Astra a longer wheelbase for increased interior room, more widely-spaced wheels on each axle for greater stability and roadholding, and a new rear suspension that, as we discovered during that early drive, makes for a terrific ride and reduced road noise.
The Insignia's FlexRide package – different settings for the dampers, throttle mapping, steering response and even the gearshift points with automatic transmission – will be offered on the Astra, too.
