Volkswagen has unveiled its new Scirocco R coupe.
The R's 2.0-litre petrol engine develops 261bhp and blasts it from 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds - which is faster than the Golf R32 - and returns 34.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 192g/km.
A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, with DSG semi automatic transmission available as an option.
Handling is enhanced by XDS electronic cross-axle traction control, plus adaptive chassis control with normal, sport and comfort modes to control suspension damping, steering and accelerator response. Brake power has been boosted with larger discs and calipers.
The car's exterior has new front and rear bumpers, with big air intakes at the front, new side sill covers and grille. At the back there's a new roof spoiler and smoked light lenses.
The R's cabin gets sports seats with 'R' logos, gloss-black interior trim, and a black leather three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel. Standard kit includes dual-zone climate control, a touchscreen CD/radio, stability control and six airbags.
UK prices will be announced nearer to the on-sale date, but expect them to be in the region of £25,000. Deliveries will begin towards the end of the year.
