Volvo plans greener and safer world - Introduction

Project zero might sound like some kind of Bond-esque Doomsday plan, but Volvo actually has some very friendly master plans up its sleeve.

The company has two targets in mind: one to produce a zero-emission car before 2020 and the other to reduce car accident fatalities to zero.

A plug-in diesel-electric hybrid arriving in 2012 is the first step towards a full-electric car that's likely to surface in 2015, while a new system will automatically brake the car to a halt to avoid collisions with pedestrians.

We tried out all three of Volvo's new technologies.
