I have owned a 1.8 VVT-i GLS for 2 years now and can not fault it.
I have never encountered any wind noise above 50mph as mentioned in your report, in fact it is one of the quietest cars I have driven, even well above 50. The standard of equipment in the gls is also exceptional. I am currently negotiating a deal for the latest Avensis. This will be my sixth, as the advert says quality speaks for itself.
I run an '02 2.0 D4D GS which has proved to be utterly dependable, if a little unexciting.
I am a high-mileage user and cover approx 30,000 miles p.a. The car is very comfortable, the standard sat-nav is excellent and the fuel economy superb - averaging in excess of 53mpg.
Its not exciting to look at and the handling could be better, but overall I am impressed with its cruising ability, economy and comfort.
Audio system is a nightmare and keeps going wrong. Also Have re-occuring braking problems.
