I have owned 5 Toyota cars (all from new) in the past 10 years(previously had larger, more expensive cars) and changed to the diesel Yaris in 2006 after a scary experience in the petrol model when I was blown across the motorway in a gale. The diesel model is superb, obviously heavier than the petrol Yaris but actually much more responsive than the Corolla T sport which I had in 2004, nippy around town and comfortable on long journeys, good on corners (and doesn't budge in high winds). In the first year I was getting 50 to 55mpg but now I get 62 -65 on long journeys at an average speed of 75mph and once got 72mpg when I was driving south with a north wind behind me.The boot is rather small but I knew that when I bought it and I do, in any case, often use the option of creating a flat load space by lowering the rear seats. I sometimes carry up to 4 large passengers and even the one who is 6ft 3ins has plenty of head and leg room. Comfort on long journeys, fuel economy, low emissions (119) and reliability are important factors for me and I would heartily recommend this model. I have never needed to take any Toyota I have owned to a dealer/garage for anything other than fuel and servicing.
I have owned this for just over a year (purchased Sept 07) and its a great car, very practical. Its good both round town and on a run and will cruise happily at 70, however a 1.4 would have been a better option especially for towing a box trailer. Have done many long journeys quite happily. Like the split, folding and adjustable rear seats, very clever and the double layered boot. The interior is plastic like most cars but like the covered storage areas. Being the TR it comes with a couple of extra features such as air con, cd player, spot lights and alloy wheels. The instrument panel is total digital which is OK now I am used to it. All switches, buttons etc feel positive and nothing has broken. Would have prefered a seperate device for the remote central locking as opposed to built into the key.
Have never had any problems with reliability, have never used the main dealership as I personally find them to expensive for doing very little.
All the panels fit perfectly and doors shut with ease. The front doors are large enough to allow good access to the rear seats.
Steering is precise, brakes are very good and suspension is OK.
Body style is OK and dateless.
Overall, a great car for the money.
I love this little car, practical, stylish inside and out, cheap to run, insure and tax , great to drive and reliable. Nippy around town, great to park and runs well on the motorway.
The seat flexibiliy and hidden storage compartments are brilliant! Very roomy inside considering it's one of the smallest in it's class. Great legroom and the boot is spacious. I have a BIG dog that manages quite comfortably to fit in the boot, mainly due to the ingenious idea of the rear seats sliding backwards and forwards as well as folding perfectly flat if you need to move something bigger.
I have owned quite a few cars, including a Mercedes A Class, new shape Mini One, Vauxhall Astra and I would say value for money the Yaris is the best all rounder.
Safety wise, I had quite a bad accident in my Yaris, and I was lucky enough to come out of it without so much as a scratch thanks to all the safety features that come in this little beast.
Overall a fabulous little car that I would HIGHLY recommend.
Obviously built down to a price and yet Toyota try to charge a premium for it. The interior is poor and full of hard plastic that fits where it touches.
Economy poor for a 1.3 litre supermini, less than 35 in normal running and reducing to under 30 when used in town a lot.
Noisy, especially from badly-fitting doors, engine never really smooth and ride very choppy. Not a car you'd want to go far in.
Load space terrible but that is one thing you can check before buying.
