Used Toyota Yaris Cross 2021-present reliability
Category: Small SUV
The Toyota Yaris Cross majors on efficiency, ride comfort and practicality. It’s a great used buy

What should I look for in a used Toyota YARIS CROSS estate?
Make sure to check whether the car has been serviced annually at a Toyota dealership, so you can make the most of the 10-year, 100,000-mile extended warranty. Otherwise, be sure to do the usual used car checks, mostly for scratches and dents on the bodywork and scuffs on the alloys. Look around the interior for signs of wear and tear, too.
When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.

What are the most common problems with a used Toyota YARIS CROSS estate?
At the time of writing, the Toyota Yaris Cross has one recall notice. If you want to check whether it has been carried out, you can contact your local Toyota dealer. You will not need to pay for anything involving the recall.
Reason for recall
On affected vehicles, there is a possibility that the Data Communication Module (DCM) may not complete the shutdown process within a specific period of time when the ignition is turned off. This could cause the DCM not to restart at the next ignition cycle, making the e-Call function unavailable. As a result the vehicles do not comply with relevant regulations.
How the manufacturer will repair: The software of the DCM will be updated via an over-the-air (OTA) wireless software update.
Number of affected vehicles: 27,327
Date of recall: 12/10/2023

Is a used Toyota YARIS CROSS estate reliable?
Despite Toyota’s excellent reputation for reliability, the Yaris Cross didn’t do very well in the small SUV section of our most recent Reliability Survey. It finished in 17th place out of 23 cars, finishing above the Ford Puma but below the Audi Q2 and Volkswagen T-Roc. It did, however, record a good score of 93.1%, which provides some reassurance.
To give you more peace of mind, Toyota as a manufacturer did much better in our car brand reliability rankings, finishing in fifth place out of 31 contenders. That places it above Ford, Skoda and Volkswagen, but below Honda and Mini.
Used Toyota Yaris Cross reliability: the owners’ view
In our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, Toyota Yaris Cross owners said their cars were impressively dependable, with very few reporting mechanical faults. Several owners described the car as “faultless” and “trouble-free,” even after multiple years of use. A small number did mention warning lights appearing unexpectedly, but in nearly all cases these were resolved quickly and under warranty.
Toyota’s dealer network also attracted positive feedback. Many respondents praised the efficiency and professionalism of their local dealerships, particularly when it came to servicing and minor repairs. Courtesy cars and clear communication were highlighted as common strengths. One or two owners felt their concerns were dismissed initially, but these were exceptions in what was otherwise a largely satisfied group.
Overall, the Yaris Cross hybrid stands out for its excellent reliability record and solid dealer support, reinforcing Toyota’s strong reputation in this area.
