For Powered by a creamy V8 with a six-speed gearbox, this will get you to the beach in no time, and the folding roof lets you pick up a tan on the way.

Against Visibility is restricted and there’s only sufficient rear legroom for children. It's far dearer than the coupe, and you’ll need deep pockets to run it.

Superb cruising refinement, speed and comfort, all with the sun on the top of your head. However, the Jaguar XK puts the BMW in its place in most ways.

6 Series Our pick

BMW 6 Series Convertible 630i SE 2dr

A fine introduction to 6 Series drop-top motoring. True, it’s not quite as effortless as the V8s to drive, but it's still our favourite version

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

There's the same range of engines in the convertible as in the coupe. But, given that even the most basic (if that's the right word) model gives excellent performance, there's no need to look beyond that.

The economy of the diesel engine may look attractive, but it's not that much better than the 3.0-litre petrol's, and as the diesel engine is much dearer, it's not worth the extra.

You can help to ease the running costs by paying up-front for a servicing package. The inflation-proof, one-off, advance payment covers the car for five years or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs sooner), and you can choose from two packages: BMW Service Inclusive covers all of your vehicle's servicing requirements, while BMW Service Inclusive Plus also covers maintenance items such as brake pads, brake discs and windscreen wipers.
