For The 503bhp 6.2-litre engine will propel you from 0-62mph in 5.0sec – impressive for such a big car. The AMG styling kit won't be too everyone's tastes, but it does make a statement.

Against As performance rises, so do running costs - alarmingly. Stiffer ride struggles to cope with bumpy roads. Interior plastics and details look a little cheap in places. Don't take it off road.

There is a – perhaps surprisingly – wide range of engines available in the M Class, and none is short of grunt. Even the lowest-powered engine is adequate, and only the power-crazed will stray beyond the 221bhp 3.0-litre diesel, which is our favourite engine.

Also don't forget that, if you're looking for an 4x4 that can do a few MPV tricks, you won't find it here – unlike some of its rivals, the M Class doesn't offer a seven-seat option. It's a strict five-seater. Likewise, don't come to the M Class expecting a full-on mud-plugger: its off-road capabilities are extremely limited.
