For Fabulous mechanical refinement and rock-solid high-speed stability. The running costs for the Mercedes M-Class are surprisingly affordable, too.
Against Cabin quality is a weak point, and optional extras are expensive.
Refined, smooth and comfortable, the Mercedes M-Class is one of the very best big 4x4s.
The Mercedes M-Class range comprises just three models, and so far we have only driven the mid-range ML 350, which comes with a 3.0-litre V6 engine. The entry-level model to the range is the four-cylinder ML 250, while the range-topping ML 63 AMG will appeal only to performance junkies with very deep pockets.
All come with seven-speed automatic transmissions and a generous specification, but we expect that the 350 will be the sweet spot of the range. There’s no shortage of extras to add to the car, but be warned: it’s very easy to add significant sums of money to your bill if you get a bit carried away when ticking boxes on the options’ list.
Fuel economy and emissions are very respectable for a car as big and heavy as the M-Class, but if you want to spread the cost of ownership, consider taking out a Service Care package, which allows to pay for your regular maintenance in a Mercedes dealership with a monthly cost.
