I bought this car in March and within a month I slid off the road in snow! I would have expected better from BMW. To be honest I am thinking of getting rid as I cannot trust the car in wet or snow. On the plus side the car is in immaculate condition for its age, I have looked at Jags the same age and they all seem to be a lot tattier HOWEVER I would feel safer driving an all wheel drive than the rear wheeled BMW.
I bought my first BMW, after years of wanting to drive the famous straight 6 engined 3 series. What an amazing car - why do people buy anything else? The driving experience is everything I was expecting, and more: the smoothness of the engine, the feel of the cabin, the acceleration, the sound!!!!.
Why do the "What Car" staff consistently rate this car so highly when readers have so many reservations? I am in agreement with the readers: I hate the ride, the tramlining and the running costs associated with the run-flat tyres; the handling may be good, but at what cost, and how often are you going to enjoy it? (maybe 1% of your driving time); the car is uncertain in the wet, and lethal on snowy or icy surfaces; the interior finish is utilitarian for the most part, but cheap in others (the soft grey plastic features, such as the front passenger door handle are black plastic, painted grey, and become very unsightly as the black paint wears away.)There are rattles in my 39,000 mile car, perhaps inevitably as a result of the hard ride. The CD/radio is of poor quality, and the carpets cheap. The engine/gearbox are the best features, smooth, powerful and economical, and reasonably quiet.
