The Audi S3 makes a strong case for itself. It's plusher than a VW Golf R, more fun than a BMW M135 and subtler than a Mercedes-AMG A35 – but there’s a catch. The S3 Vorsprung is the sweet spot in the range, thanks to its brilliant adaptive dampers, but doesn’t come cheap. And at that price, you’re dangerously close to entering RS3 territory – and that car unlocks another level of performance.
The trim
Sport models get cruise control, three-zone air conditioning, power-folding door mirrors, 17in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a rear bench that folds in a 60/40 split.
The engine
The entry-level 1.5-litre petrol engine has a fairly modest 114bhp. We’ve yet to drive this version.
