The Audi A6 Avant is a comfortable, quiet and technologically advanced estate that's beautifully built. A BMW 5 Series Touring is better to drive and has a more user-friendly infotainment system, though.get the best price

S line trim brings larger 19in alloy wheels, sportier looks, tinted rear windows and leather and Alcantara seats. We reckon it's the pick of the range.

This 282bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is even smoother than the four-cylinder 40 TDI and stronger across its entire rev range, but it's somewhat hamstrung by its eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is hugely reluctant to change down. Despite that, it manages 0-62mph in just 5.4sec and has official economy in the low 40s. It costs a fair bit extra to buy, though.
