Review

The Audi A6 Avant is a comfortable, quiet and technologically advanced estate that's beautifully built. A BMW 5 Series Touring is better to drive and has a more user-friendly infotainment system, though.

Entry-level Sport trim gives you all the features you really need, with electric front seats, four-way lumbar adjustment, LED headlights, 18in alloy wheels, leather seat trim, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, ambient LED interior lighting, a powered tailgate and keyless start. The standard infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav, Bluetooth, a DAB radio, an 10.1in touchscreen and a punchy 10-speaker stereo.

When specified with the 335bhp 55 TFSI 3.0-litre petrol engine, the A6 responds enthusiastically whenever you ask for a burst of acceleration cracking 0-62mph in 5.1sec. However, the diesels will be much cheaper to run, and so will the similarly lively plug-in hybrid if you top up its batteries fairly regularly. Although claimed economy is mid-thirties, you’ll have to drive very carefully to crack 30mpg.
