Review

The BMW 3 Series leads the charge in the premium executive class. Its primary appeal is in the way it drives, but its engines, standard equipment list and infotainment system are first rate as well. The firm ride on M Sport models is just about the only thing we can grumble about in this near-flawless executive car.

SE is the entry-level trim and comes with pretty much all that you might expect and need, including 17in alloy wheels, three-zone climate control (including a separate controller for the rear passengers), cruise control, power-folding door mirrors and automatic lights and wipers. On top of that you get a cracking infotainment system with an 8.8in display, sat-nav and Apple CarPlay, plus LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

If petrol power is your cup of fossil fuel, the 184hp 2.0-litre 320i is a great place to start. It's perky enough for most situations, including overtaking on country roads, and its rev-happy nature sits well with the 3 Series' sporty character.
