Often the verdict for a car costing this little would be ‘cheap but not great’. Not here, though, because the Dacia Sandero is a fine small car to spend time in and is actually above average in many areas. For practicality, it’s actually one of the best in the class. Entry-level Access trim is a bit too stripped out for most people, but the top level Comfort trim with either the TCe 90 or TCe 100 Bi-Fuel engine is a great all-round package for very little outlay. Only a disappointing Euro NCAP safety score lets the side down.get the best price

Essential trim adds wheel trims, body-coloured bumpers, cruise control, central locking, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a front centre armrest, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and air-con. It's worth considering, but range-topping Comfort trim is worth the extra.

This turbocharged engine has 89bhp and a six-speed manual gearbox (with the option of a CVT automatic), which will zip you from 0-62mph in 11.7sec. Yes, that’s about a second slower than rivals like the Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost 95 and Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSI 95, but it doesn’t feel slow. It has plenty of low- and mid-range shove for keeping up with traffic and revs out eagerly when you give it full beans.
