There’s something pleasingly unconventional about the Land Rover Defender. It doesn’t quite fit the mould, being brilliant off-road and good to drive on the black stuff. In three-door 90 form it’s a bit too quirky to recommend, but go for our favourite Defender 110 D250 S, add optional air suspension and seven seats, and you’ll have a car that’s smooth, torquey, comfortable and practical; and, on the weekend, you can tow a huge caravan or climb a mountain in it.
The trim
Sitting above Defender HSE trim, X-Dynamic HSE adds automatic headlight levelling and an interactive driver’s display.
The engine
This entry-level, 246bhp, straight-six diesel D250 is our pick of the range. You'll find it has more than enough low-down pull for effortless in-gear acceleration (on or off road) and it'll do 0-62mph in as little as 8.0sec, depending on whether you go for the 90 or the 110. It's also pretty smooth and quiet, and comes with an excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. The downsides are 25-30mpg in the real world and the top-rate company car tax band.
