The Land Rover Defender is a very versatile SUV. It's stylish, practical and plush, plus it's available in a variety of body styles to cater for different needs. While the Defender is one of the more dependable seven-seaters, Land Rover's overall reputation for reliability remains a concern. It's also still quite expensive – even as a used buy.

If you want a greater choice of engines (including our preferred D250 diesel), S trim is what you’ll need. For a reasonable additional fee over the standard Defender, it adds 19in alloy wheels (don’t worry, the fashionable steel wheels are still a no-cost option), keyless entry, automatic main beam, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, a central front armrest, part-leather seats with 12-way semi-electric adjustment, and a 12.3in digital driver’s display.

This entry-level, 246bhp, straight-six diesel D250 is our pick of the range. You'll find it has more than enough low-down pull for effortless in-gear acceleration (on or off road) and it'll do 0-62mph in as little as 8.0sec, depending on whether you go for the 90 or the 110. It's also pretty smooth and quiet, and comes with an excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. The downsides are 25-30mpg in the real world and the top-rate company car tax band.
