All MG5 EVs get an electric motor with 154bhp and a 57kWh (usable) battery pack that’s good for an official WLTP combined range of 250 miles – but expect more like 200 miles in real-world driving conditions. Performance is punchy compared to rivals and the range is pretty decent.

MG has a long heritage in the UK, and while these days it is owned by Chinese firm SAIC, it is slowly but surely beefing up its model range.

Kicking things off is the MG 3, a rival for affordable hatchbacks such as the Dacia Sandero and Skoda Fabia. Then there’s the ZS small SUV, which faces off against the likes of the Renault Captur and Seat Arona. And at the top of the range is the GS, which goes up against Dacia’s Duster and the Ssangyong Tivoli.

While any future MG products are likely to be introduced in China before coming to the UK, design work is still undertaken in the UK. MG’s design studio is based at Longbridge, where the brand made its name with models such as the MGB GT.

MG MOTOR UK

Entry-level SE trim is generously equipped, with keyless start and keyless entry, air-con, 16in alloy wheels, front and rear electric windows, silver-coloured roof rails, adaptive cruise control, automatic lights and an automatic electric parking brake. This is the cheapest and most recommendable trim.

Range-topping Trophy trim adds leather seats (heated in the front), 17in alloys, climate control, electrically folding mirrors, auto wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. We’d be tempted to keep it cheap and stick with SE, but if you’ve got the budget for Trophy it’s still a bargain compared to many electric cars.
