The MG S5 EV is a significant step forward over the ZS EV. It’s not quite good enough to trouble the Skoda Elroq, but cheaper versions look great value against smaller, similarly priced electric SUVs. Our preferred range-topping Long Range Trophy combines lively performance with a smart, user-friendly interior that offers plenty of space.
The trim
There’s a sizeable jump up in price from SE to Trophy but you do benefit from bigger 18in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, power folding door mirrors, heated and electrically adjustable leather seats, rain-sensing wipers, a mobile phone bluetooth key, a heated steering wheel, rear reading lights, six-speaker audio system (up from four-speakers), a 360-degree parking camera and a wireless phone-charger.
The engine
The Long Range gets a 61.7kWh battery, a stronger 228bhp motor, and a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds. That’s quicker than any Kia EV3 or Renault Scenic and keeps pace with the range-topping Elroq 85.
