2017 Land Rover Discovery verdict and spec
All-new, full-size Land Rover Discovery arrives to take on the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. It’s on sale now priced from £43,495...
Should I buy one?
Make no mistake: the new Discovery is a brilliant SUV. It’s more practical than any of its rivals, suitably posh inside, great to drive and even pretty good value, undercutting the Audi Q7 by several thousands of pounds if you stick with the entry-level 2.0-litre diesel.
That 2.0 engine is smoother than you might expect, too, although we reckon the punchier 3.0 V6 diesel is worth the premium (£1500 on the same trim level) because neither engine is particularly efficient, something Land Rover acknowledges but says could only have been improved if interior space had been sacrificed for better aerodynamics.
In any case, recent legislation means that private buyers won’t pay any more VED (road tax) than they would on rivals, and in every other respect the Discovery is tough to fault. If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV with the emphasis on practicality, your local Land Rover dealer should be your very first port of call.
