It’s true, the D180 hasn’t the smoothness or the speed of the more powerful Velar 3.0 V6 diesel, but don’t let that put you off. The D180 is good enough in those respects, and in exchange it means this luxury car comes with a less luxury price tag. And not only is the list price £6000 less than the 3.0 V6, we were getting over 35mpg without trying too hard. Bet you’re thinking the catch is it’s spartanly equipped for that money? Well, it’s not teeming with toys in SE spec but you get dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, keyless start and entry, heated front seats and ambient interior lighting all included.

If you’re looking for precise handling and the most performance for your buck, there are better options. For those that value a decent ride, quiet motorway miles and space, then we commend highly the Velar D180. Indeed, unless you really must have the last word in smoothness or crave more performance, the D180 is our pick of the range.
