The Volkswagen Golf continues to be one of our favourite family cars. It's practical, tidy to drive, comfortable, and the infotainment system is very well equipped and easy to use. If you are looking for something that's plusher than the cheapest in the class, such as the Skoda Octavia, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, but has a bit of upmarket presence and feel, then the Golf merges those two worlds very well indeed.

If you want in-built sat-nav then go for Match. Otherwise it mirrors the kit of our favourite SE trim, including 16in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, power-folding door mirrors, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and automatic emergency braking.

The 113bhp version is one of our favourites. It's no speed machine, granted, but revs keenly and feels livelier than you might imagine for such a small engine. That applies even when you're on the motorway; you just need to work it a bit harder than some of the more powerful alternatives. Comes with a standard six-speed manual gearbox that's slick to use, or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
