Review
The Volkswagen Golf continues to be one of our favourite family cars. It's practical, tidy to drive, comfortable, and the infotainment system is very well equipped and easy to use. If you are looking for something that's plusher than the cheapest in the class, such as the Skoda Octavia, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, but has a bit of upmarket presence and feel, then the Golf merges those two worlds very well indeed.

Engine: 2.0 TDI
If you want a diesel and can stretch your budget, we’d take this 2.0-litre engine over the 1.6 TDI 115; it’s stronger from low revs and always smoother, yet still returns good claimed fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Available with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed (DSG) auto.
