The Volvo XC60 can still fend off newer rivals with its roomy, upmarket interior and well-judged ride. It's a fine choice, although the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are better to drive. If you do choose an XC60, we recommend Core trim with the B5 engine (or, if you're a company car user, the T6 PHEV).
The trim
Mid-range Plus is worth considering if you want a few more luxuries; it gives the XC60 a more upmarket interior, fully electric seats, four-zone climate control, keyless drive, a premium stereo, a heated windscreen, heated rear seats and a whole host of extra safety features.
The engine
With 247bhp, the B5 can sprint to 62mph in 6.9sec, so it's plenty brisk enough. It comes exclusively with four-wheel drive, which is handy if you live up a slippery lane.
