This is Mitsubishi's new rival to the likes of the Ford Focus - the Lancer.

The car will make its world debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January, and follows last year's Concept-X and Concept-Sportback design studies.

It's likely to go on sale in the UK early in 2008 with a range of five engines including a Volkswagen-sourced 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel. The car will also underpin the 10th in Mitsubishi's line of Evo performance models. Expect this car to produce at least 300bhp.

More down-to-earth versions of the Lancer are targeting cars such as the Focus and Volkswagen Golf, but it's a little bigger than the rest of the competition. Measuring 4570mm from tip to tail, the Lancer falls mid-way between a Ford Focus and Mondeo in length.
