Pick-Up

Citroën is probably most famous for its quirky design, and the latest cars from the brand live up to this tradition. In fact, it&nbsp;tends to keep away from sportiness altogether and instead tries to put comfort first.

Value (but not cheapness) is also key to the appeal of most Citroëns. And the company’s range includes everything from a tiny EV (the Ami) through to the C3 small hatchback and&nbsp;the large van-based&nbsp;Spacetourer MPV.

Its range of SUVs are all badged Aircross, and like the rest of its range place emphasis on comfort, not speed.

CITROEN

If you want a new car but would rather not spend much, Dacia is a great place to start your search.

This budget brand builds some of Britain’s cheapest new cars, including the Sandero hatchback. And don’t think cheap automatically means corners have been cut, because the Sandero has been commended at the annual What Car? Car of the Year awards on numerous occasions.

Other Dacia models include the&nbsp;higher-riding Sandero Stepway, seven-seat Jogger, and rugged Duster SUV. And while these cost slightly more than the Sandero, they’re still priced aggressively enough that they’re really only competing directly with used cars.

Dacia manages this by borrowing mechanicals and technology from its owner, Renault, to minimise development costs.

DACIA

Modern Fiats fall into two categories: the retro models and those with more functional designs.

Cars in the first camp appeal to the heart and include the 124 Spider sports car and the 500 series: a hatchback, a convertible, an SUV and two MPVs.

By contrast, the remaining models rely on their practicality and attractive pricing, with the Panda city car, Tipo hatchback and Fullback pick-up truck all prime examples.

Fiat can trace its roots back to the 19th century but is now part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, along with Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep and Maserati.

FIAT

Ford builds some of the most popular cars in the UK, including the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks.

This success is partly down to longevity and the fact that there’s a Ford dealer around every corner. However, it’s also because Fords tend to offer good value and be among the best cars in their respective classes to drive.

The company’s huge range also helps; it offers everything from the small – but surprisingly practical – Ka+ to the large and lavishly equipped Edge SUV.

Meanwhile, other highlights of the range include the S-Max and Galaxy people carriers, the Mondeo executive car and the Ranger pick-up.

FORD

If you’re in the market for a pick-up truck, chances are you’ll have heard of Isuzu. The Japanese brand makes buses and lorries for markets all over the world, but it’s most famous for the D-Max.

A rival to the Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok, the D-Max pick-up is aimed at drivers who need rugged go-anywhere ability and lots of space, and for whom a conventional SUV just won’t cut it.

ISUZU

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

In the same way that Infiniti acts as Nissan’s premium arm, Lexus has a similar tie-in with Toyota. And since most of Toyota’s models are offered as hybrids, it’s no surprise to see the same from Lexus, although there are some traditional petrol engines, too.

The brand focuses heavily on SUVs – namely the NX and RX – but also has the CT hatchback, ES executive saloon and LS luxury car among its portfolio. More small and large SUVs are expected in the future.

Like Toyota, Lexus has built a very strong reputation for reliability and regularly finishes very close to the top of our annual Reliability Survey.

LEXUS

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

MERCEDES-BENZ

Nissan turned up early to the SUV party, with its Qashqai paving the way for the countless models we see today. The Qashqai continues to sell in big numbers in the UK, too, and was also our overall Car of the Year in 2014.

Don’t think Nissan is just about SUVs, though. As well as the Qashqai, the smaller Juke and the larger X-Trail, the Japanese brand has the Micra hatchback, GT-R sports car and Navara pick-up truck.

Nissan was also one of the first big car makers to launch a fully electric car, with its latest Leaf being one of the best on the market.

Despite being based in Japan, Nissan has long committed to building cars in the UK, making several of its best-selling models at a huge factory in Sunderland.

NISSAN

Peugeot has its strongest model line-up for some years, with some of its cars now rated by our testers as being among the very best available.

Highlights focus around the firm’s newest SUVs, the 3008 and 5008. The 5008 was named Large SUV of the Year at the 2018 What Car? Awards, thanks to its appealing blend of space, interior quality and low running costs.

That bodes well for future launches, too, because many of the learnings from these cars will be passed on as new versions of existing cars are launched – something that could take many years, because the Peugeot range is so big, ranging from an entry-level supermini with the 108 to an executive saloon with the 508, up into the SUV range and also vans.

Buyers should evaluate some of the lower-rated cars in the range more carefully, though. Some are now quite old, and are subsequently left behind in terms of quality when compared with the opposition, making them below-average buys, in our estimation.

PEUGEOT

Hatchbacks, SUVs, hybrids, electric cars: Renault makes them all, in a variety of shapes and sizes, meaning&nbsp;it has a line-up designed to tempt pretty much everyone.

From the roadside, the standout feature of all its cars is design, with them instantly recognisable as members of the Renault family, without being so similar that they fall&nbsp;into the Russian doll trap. However, in terms of ability they're a mixed bag,&nbsp;ranging&nbsp;from very good to no better than average.

Models that fall into the former camp include the Clio small hatchback and Megane E-Tech electric car, while the smaller Zoe electric car is also impressive in most respects; it's just a pity Renault omits key safety kit.

On the other hand, the Captur, Arkana and Austral SUVs are all outclassed by several rivals.

Renault has some exciting new models planned, including a new Scenic (this time it will be an electric SUV instead of a conventionally powered MPV) and two cars that reimagine classic Renaults: the 4 and 5.

RENAULT

One of the greatest success stories in the car world of recent decades is Skoda’s rise to become a hugely credible mainstream maker of good-value, good-sense cars.

Central to that success has been its place within the VW Group, alongside the Volkswagen brand itself, plus the likes of Seat and Audi. That has given it access to exactly the same underpinnings for its cars as the other brands, and it has complemented this by adding its own developments, from the way the cars drive and ride through to the features they have and the pricing.

The result is a range that extends from a city car to a large executive saloon, with family and large seven-seat SUVs too. There’s a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are competitive for the class.

As a result, Skoda has a range of cars that is almost entirely class-leading or among the class leaders, and it has enjoyed long-time success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

SKODA

Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.

That process seems to be working for buyers, with the hugely popular and striking-looking C-HR SUV in particular attracting a great deal of interest. The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.

However, it’s worth noting that this period of transition is also a work in progress, and that many of the firm’s cars are still rated as being no more than average among class rivals by our testers.

TOYOTA

Vauxhall has an incredibly diverse range of cars on sale, a few of which stand out above the class average. Add in the fact that it still offers some of the largest Target Price discounts in the market (something it is trying, without huge success, to cut back on), and there are very good reasons to consider buying one of its better models.

However, you need to choose carefully, because it is also a brand in transition. It has a newish parent company – the same one that owns Citroën, DS and Peugeot. And while Vauxhall’s newer models tend to be competitive, some of the others feel dated; a quick check of our star ratings will reveal which is which.

Still, given the recent success of sister brands Citroën and especially Peugeot, each new launch should make its range more appealing to buyers.

VAUXHALL

The VW Group famously spends more money on research and development than any rival – and as a result, perhaps it should be no surprise that our testers rate its cars so consistently highly.

The fact that many of those cars use the same underpinnings also helps, because it means that if they get it right once, they have the foundations to keep on getting it right.

However, the Volkswagen brand faces plenty of tough competition, often from within, because the rapidly rising Seat and Skoda brands that are also part of the group have access to the same technology.

The Renault Kangoo name is synonymous with good value among small van drivers, and the latest version – which won the Best Small Van category in our most recent <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/van-and-commercial-vehicle-awards-best-small-van/n25156">Van and Commercial Vehicle Awards</a> – stays true to that theme, with pricing that remains competitive against rivals, and the promise of plenty of kit on most versions.

We like the Kangoo's spacious interior and large load area, plus the fact that it's quieter on the road than previous models. Indeed, it's more versatile inside than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/transit-connect/van/review/n18510">Ford Transit Connect</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/caddy/van/review/n18482">Volkswagen Caddy</a> thanks to innovative features like the Easy Inside Rack, which allows you to store longer items, such as ladders, along the roof of the van. We put our verdict to the test by <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/renault-kangoo-van-long-term-test/n25613">living with one</a> for six months, and it didn’t disappoint.

Renault Kangoo

While the original Ford Transit Courier was based on the diminuitive Ford Fiesta, this latest version is based on the Ford Puma small SUV, and that means it's grown dramatically – resulting in more space for both people and cargo.

Indeed, with 2.9m3 of loadspace available, the Transit Courier compares well with rivals including the&nbsp;Citroën Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo Cargo, as well as Ford's own slightly larger Transit Connect.

You can have your Transit Courier with either petrol or diesel power, but it's the latter which&nbsp;we'd recommend for most drivers for its extra low-down pulling power. If you'd rather have a greener choice, then an all-electric Ford E-Transit Courier will be coming soon.

Ford Transit Courier

Based on the latest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/golf/hatchback/review/n17371">Volkswagen Golf</a>&nbsp;family car, the Volkswagen&nbsp;Caddy has a wealth of safety and driver assistance features that make it enjoyable, safe and relaxing to drive.

Inside the Caddy feels well built, and even though its 10.0in infotainment screen features some confusing menus, it does at least include <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a> smartphone mirroring to keep you in touch with your co-workers.&nbsp;

In terms of practicality, you can get more inside it thank you can in the Ford Transit Connect, but long-wheelbase versions of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/proace-city/van/review/n22091">Toyota Proace City</a> – as well as its badge-engineered siblings from Citroën, Peugeot and Vauxhall – can hold more still.&nbsp;Our favourite 2.0-litre diesel engine endows the Caddy Cargo with plenty of low-down grunt, and should also help to keep your running costs in check.

Volkswagen Caddy Cargo

The Citroën Berlingo is one of four badge-engineered vans that largely share the same qualities. Like its siblings – the Peugeot Partner, Toyota Proace City and Vauxhall Combo Cargo – the Berlingo is decent to drive and can carry an impressive amount of cargo. It also comes fully stocked with safety and assistance kit, and gets the option of a slick automatic gearbox.&nbsp;

Where the Berlingo carries a slight edge over its siblings is with its seats, which are comfy and provide the right kind of support for longer motorway trips. And while most of the materials used inside aren't what you'd call plush, they do at least feel hard-wearing. Enterprise models also come with a cradle which is useful for holding your mobile phone in place.

In terms of engines, the range-topping 1.5-litre diesel engine (called Blue HDi 130) is our top choice, because it has enough power to make easy work of long motorway journeys yet should still be efficient. Citroën Berlingo

Like its badge-engineered siblings, the Toyota Proace City gets its own styling to help it stand out from the small van crowd, but ultimately impresses in all the same ways as the Berlingo, the Combo Cargo and the Partner. That is to say, it's good to drive, has an interior which feels like it will stand the test of time, and can haul around an impressive amount of cargo.

However, the Proace City comes with more equipment as standard, and while that makes it more expensive than some rivals, it also comes with a better warranty should things go wrong (not that they should, with Toyota consistently being a top performer in our real-world Reliability Surveys). You'll be covered for five years with the Proace City versus three years for the&nbsp;Citroën, Peugeot and Vauxhall, and that gives the Proace City a slight edge here.

As in the Berlingo above, it's the 98bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine which we think will suit most drivers best, but there's a lesser 74bhp of the same engine available too if you want to keep your costs down.

Toyota Proace City

The Peugeot Partner is very similar to the Citroën Berlingo van, Toyota Proace City and Vauxhall Combo Cargo – that means it drives in the same manner as those vans, and that we recommend the same 1.5-litre diesel engine for most buyers.

It's worthy of standing in isolation though, not just because it looks different, but also because <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/peugeot">Peugeot</a> has morphed its celebrated i-Cockpit design to fit into the small van. This unusual arrangement has you looking over a small steering wheel at the instruments, rather than through it, and in a segment where the driver is often the sole occupier, and therefore the centre of attention, we think it's worth looking at if you want something a little left-field.

Like the rest of Peugeot's van range, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/peugeot-rolls-out-in-car-artificial-intelligence/n26519">Partner also uses artificial intelligence technology</a> to assist with plotting sat-nav destinations. Peugeot Partner

Given that it's the final entry into the badge-engineered foursome which also includes the&nbsp;Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Toyota Proace City, it won't surprise you to learn that, like those models,&nbsp;the Vauxhall Combo Cargo is good to drive and comes with an economical line-up of engines – there's even the fully electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/combo-e/van/review/n23708">Vauxhall Combo&nbsp;Electric</a> if you want to go green.

The 98bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine which we think would suit most drivers best offers plenty of pep, even when you've loaded the cargo bay with weight, and it comes with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox

The interior of the Combo Cargo is a very usable, if visually uninspiring, space, with lots of storage options for your odds and ends, and materials which feel like they'll stand up to years of rough work.

While every version of the Combo Cargo comes with decent safety and convenience kit, its price is ultimately higher than is badge-engineered siblings, which is why it comes last out of the four vans here.

Vauxhall Combo Cargo

If you're looking for a small van with a Ford badge on its bonnet, yet the Ford Transit Courier&nbsp;is just a bit too small for your needs, then the&nbsp;Transit Connect is the next logical step up.

It's&nbsp;a well-rounded van, but shines by being one of the best options in this class to drive – helped by the fact that it shares its underpinnings with cars including the Volkswagen Golf. You can choose between two 2.0-litre diesel engines producing either 101bhp or 120bhp, or a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/plug-in-hybrid-cars/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a> model with an official range of up to 74 miles. That could mean you could complete your commute, or your delivery route, without using any petrol.

All versions of the Transit Connect can carry a standard Euro Pallett in the rear, and there's a tota volume of 3.1m3 in the load bay – more than you'll get in the Volkswagen Caddy Cargo, but less than rivals including the Toyota Proace City and Vauxhall Combo Cargo.

We like the Transit Connect's interior, which is well thought out and sturdily constructed, but the infotainment system can be a bit sluggish to respond to your inputs.

Ford Transit Connect

Think of the Mercedes Citan as being the more glamorous cousin to the Renault Kangoo which tops this list. That's because both vans share many of their components under the skin, along with the Nissan Townstar.&nbsp;

That's a good thing for the Citan, which despite only having one engine option at launch feels sprightly on city streets and is pleasantly quiet. The interior is a step above the Renault’s, too, with plenty of soft-touch materials and Mercedes' dazzling MBUX infotainment system, which is loaded with features and looks swish.

In terms of carrying capacity, the Citan again apes its Renault sibling, with a maximum payload of 667kg and being able to tow up to 1500kg.

It's a shame that the Citan misses out on some of the Kangoo's more practical features, though, which combined with a high price stops it from climbing any further up our rankings.

Mercedes Citan

Although the Citroën Ami Cargo isn’t technically a van (rather a quadricycle), its low price and tiny dimensions earn it a place on this list because it serves a particular niche in a way that few rivals can hope to compete with.

The payload limit of 140kg and the 260-litre cargo volume are rather impressive considering its size, and the Ami Cargo – much like the regular&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/ami/city-car/review/n23515">Citroën Ami</a>&nbsp;two-seater&nbsp;– is nimble and nippy, proving a hoot to drive around town.

As you might expect, the Ami Cargo's interior is minimalistic, but you still get a heater, a cooling fan, an optional cradle to hold your phone,and a single USB port to keep it charged.&nbsp;Unfortunately, the Ami Cargo’s 46-mile official range and 28mph top speed mean it’s not much good if you want to venture beyond congested urban streets.

Whether you're a painter and decorator, a delivery driver or just someone who regularly needs to move more luggage than a standard car can manage, then a small van could be your next best bet.Small vans are typically no larger than many <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-cars/n16996">family cars</a> or <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/executive-cars/n2004">executive cars</a>, yet for tradespeople working in the city, are ever-important for manouvering around increasingly busy streets.Any small van worth its salt will be short enough to fit into the kind of tight parking spaces you'll see in a typical city centre, and narrow enough to fit through width restrictors. Plus, they need to offer economical yet powerful engines, along with good visibility.

The philosophy makes it possible to do more, with less expense, by building something that can be reused many times, rather than focusing on bespoke products. It’s something Kia is putting into practice for its entry into the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-electric-vans/n21136">electric vans</a> market. The first model – called the Kia PV5 – is based on new underpinnings designed to be scalable so they can be used to build vehicles in a range of sizes and body types. It's expected to hit showrooms in the middle of 2025 and be followed by the larger Kia PV7 later that year.It has a sleek design incorporating razor-thin LED headlights, tough cladding around its lower edges and tall windows. While it almost looks like a vehicle out of a sci-fi film, its shape has the real-world benefit that it should offer great visibility and practicality.

Another strong selling point of the PV5, especially for owner-operators planning to keep their van beyond a three-year lease period, is that it gets the same seven-year/100,000-mile warranty as <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/kia">Kia car models</a>.That's the longest available, with the exception of Toyotas, which are available with up to 10 years/100,000 miles of cover if the vehicle is serviced at an approved dealership.There’s no detail yet on what might power the PV5, but official charging figures suggest it could borrow the 95kWh (usable) batteries from Kia’s growing range of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric cars</a>, including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev9/estate/review/n26277">Kia EV9</a> SUVs. At its <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/fastest-charging-electric-cars/n26105">maximum charging rate</a> of 150kW, it should take less than 30 minutes to charge from 10-80% at a fast public charger.It can also accept a 22kW DC charge, which is twice that of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/vivaro-e/van/review/n22197">Vauxhall Vivaro Electric</a>. That could be key to the PV5's appeal, because it will enable faster charges from depots for far less cost than from a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/electric-car-charging-networks-rated/n23269">public charge point</a>.Kia has not given range figurers for the PV5, but for context, Kia's big electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/7-seat-cars/n2344">seven-seater</a>, the EV9, has an official range of up to 349 miles, while and the PV5-rivalling <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2023-ford-e-transit-custom-electric-van-revealed-price-specs-and-release-date/n24525">Ford E-Transit Custom</a> van can officially manage 236 miles between charges.The PV5 and PV7 will connect with Kia's Plug &amp; Charge app, which is designed to make finding charging points and starting a charge simpler and quicker. For example, it will allow charging to start as soon as the cable is plugged in and include a route planner showing public chargers around the operator's depot.The PV5 and PV7 will both be front-wheel drive, and will have a tight turning circle for greater manoeuvrability in tight spaces. At launch, the PV5 will be available in a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-medium-vans/n20726">medium van</a>, high-roof and chassis cab forms. The new van underpinnings would theoretically allow operators to change their vans' bodystyles to meet their needs.

The fixed driver area of the PV5 features digital instruments and a large Android-powered <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-car-infotainment-systems-tested-and-rated/n21269">infotainment screen</a> spanning the width of the interior. A digital key will make it easier for multiple drivers to share each van.The front passenger seat can be removed depending on what the van is being used for. Kia says the PV5 will have best-in-class loading height and "superior" cargo volume, although no figures have been revealed.Although prices have yet to be confirmed, Kia is said to be targeting an entry price of around £30,600 – less than you’d pay for the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/renault/kangoo-e-tech/van/review/n20116">Renault Kangoo E-Tech</a> small electric van today, without VAT. Kia is working with external partners on building a self-driving taxi version of the PV5, although that isn't due to arrive until 2028 at the earliest.The PV7 will be the largest van in Kia’s line-up, and will take on other electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-large-vans/n20727">large vans</a> including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/e-transit/van/review/n24074">Ford E-Transit</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/maxus/e-deliver-9/van/review/n24737">Maxus eDeliver 9</a> when it arrives in 2027. The PV7 will be available with <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/4x4s-for-off-roading/n26188">four-wheel drive</a>. At the other end of the range is the PV1 electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-small-vans/n20723">small van</a>, which is designed for transporting items in the city and could eventually arrive without space for a driver, and instead rely on self-driving technology.

All Kia’s PBV vans (an umbrella term referencing the range's scalable electric underpinnings) will feature a rail system designed to help load items between the vans, and reduce strain on human workers. Fittingly,&nbsp;given&nbsp;its name, one of the key attractions of the Mercedes Sprinter is its range of punchy engines, and there’s a version to suit almost everyone.&nbsp;

The 143bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine is our preferred choice in the Sprinter. If you'd rather go electric, there's also the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/e-sprinter/van/review/n22228">Mercedes eSprinter</a>,&nbsp;although that has a rather short&nbsp;official range&nbsp;(up to 95 miles).

The Sprinter shines when it comes to its interior; the materials used inside are nicer than most rivals offer. The plastics, for example, are soft and textured, and the 10.3in infotainment touchscreen you get on high-end versions looks suitably premium and is, for the most part, easy to get along with.

One of the few vans to be built in the UK as well as sold here, the Vauxhall Vivaro is based on the same underpinnings as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/dispatch/van/review/n18249">Citroën Dispatch</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/expert/van/review/n20207">Peugeot Expert</a>.

Don't think that sharing parts with other models makes the Vivaro any less practical, though. In fact, its maximum payload of 1458kg is impressive in the&nbsp;medium vans&nbsp;market.&nbsp;

There are the usual petrol and diesel engines to choose from in the Vivaro, but there's also a fully electric&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/vivaro-e/van/review/n22197">Vauxhall Vivaro Electric</a>&nbsp;with an official range of up to 205 miles, which could be more than enough&nbsp;if your business is based mainly in town.

The Ford Ranger is the best all-round pick-up truck we've ever tested, outdoing all of its rivals including the closely related <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/amarok/pick-up/review/n17220">Volkswagen Amarok</a>.

It’s very practical, even by pick-up truck standards; its load bay is large, its maximum payload high and its interior roomy. Thanks to the shared underpinnings, these qualities are also found in the Amarok, but unlike that pick-up the Ranger is available in a variety of body styles, allowing you to prioritise interior or load space to suit your needs.

On top of that, the Ranger is great to drive, with a range of gutsy engines and a settled ride.

If you're looking to own your van rather than lease one, the Renault Trafic is a good option&nbsp;because of&nbsp;its low price, generous equipment and variety of&nbsp;engine options.

It comes with lots of safety kit, too, including automatic emergency braking (<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/what-is-aeb-and-how-does-it-work/n3283">AEB</a>), blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/renault">Renault</a>&nbsp;also lets you add adaptive cruise control as an option, helping you to keep pace with the ebb and flow of traffic&nbsp;and easing&nbsp;driver workload on longer journeys.

You'll find less space to store your odds and ends in the Trafic than you would in some rivals, however, and its infotainment system can be frustratingly slow to respond.

The VW Transporter is a favourite among private buyers and small businesses alike&nbsp;because of its high resale values (and the resultant&nbsp;low leasing prices)&nbsp;and modest running costs.

Beyond that, it offers composed handling and brisk enough performance, even if you’re hauling the maximum payload. There’s even a sporty version (inspired by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/golf/hatchback/review/n149">VW Golf GTI</a>&nbsp;hot hatch) that has&nbsp;more aggressive styling, a 201bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine and lowered suspension.

Inside, the Transporter features a few luxury touches, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and pleasingly textured plastics, resulting in an interior that feels a cut above rivals'. The standard 6.5in infotainment screen is easy to get along with too.

Striking the balance between affordability and versatility, the Vauxhall Movano is a solid all-rounder in the large van category.

As you might expect for a large van, interior storage is a strong suit, and its load carrying capacity surpasses that of its main rivals, such as the ever-popular Ford Transit. It’s virtually identical to the Citroen Relay, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/boxer/van/review/n18206">Peugeot Boxer</a> and Toyota Proace Max and is available as a panel van (with the choice of three lengths and three heights),&nbsp; as a double or single chassis cab or with a range of conversions..

What’s more, the Movano offers a solid driving experience with frugal running costs, and the Movano Electric has the ability to reduce fuel bills further still.

Even entry-level versions of the Peugeot Partner have an excellent maximum volume and payload for their size, and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/peugeot">Peugeot</a> offers long wheelbase and high payload versions for those who want to carry even more stuff.

The Partner’s sister vans – the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/berlingo-cv/van/review/n18480">Citroën Berlingo</a> and Vauxhall Combo – are just as practical, but the Peugeot sets itself apart with a more modern feeling interior.

For those who plan to use their Peugeot Partner around town, we’d recommend the BlueHDi 100 engine for its balance of power and fuel economy. However, drivers doing more motorway journeys will be better off with the more powerful BlueHDI 130 engine, with its six-speed manual gearbox (or optional eight-speed automatic).

As well as being very versatile, with its range of available bodystyles and maximum payloads, the Vauxhall Combo offers fine handling and a pleasant ride for a van. That’s largely because it shares its underpinnings with passenger cars, such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/c5-aircross/hatchback/review/n18246">Citroën C5 Aircross</a>.

The Combo is available with a choice of two 1.5-litre diesel engines. The 99bhp variant offers the best value for urban drivers, while the 129bhp engine provides a welcome bump in performance for regular motorway users. Both come with a six-speed manual gearbox, but this is notchy and ill-suited to the van’s nippy character.

If you’re looking to reduce your carbon emissions, the all-electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/combo-e/van/review/n23708">Vauxhall Combo-e</a> is well worth considering.

In what is usually a slow month for new vehicle sales, a total of 16,575 new vans, pickups and commercial SUVs were sold last month – the highest August figure since 2021 – according to official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-large-vans/n20727">Large vans</a> weighing between 2500-3500kg continued to be most popular amongst buyers, with 11,753 of them leaving the showroom. This was followed by <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-medium-vans/n20726">medium vans</a> between 2000-2500kg, which accounted for 2,771 of vans sold. The market for <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-small-vans/n20723">small vans</a> weighing less than 2000kg saw the most growth, up 24.5% to 427, with new models driving up sales.

However, despite overall market growth, sales of 4x4s and pickups were down 12.9% and 2.5% respectively.While electric cars <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/biggest-selling-cars/n17053">grew in popularity</a> in August, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-electric-vans/n21136">electric van</a> sales were in decline for the third consecutive month, down 30.3% from last year. This accounted for just 5.1% of the market share, despite the growing number of electric models to choose from.So, which vans attracted the most buyers last month? Tradespeople lost an estimated £82m worth of tools due to thefts from vans last year*, and a van is broken into every 12 minutes – figures which have prompted Ford to improve the security of its vans.New <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/transit/van/review/n18188">Ford Transit</a> models and the latest <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/transit-custom/van/review/n18288">Ford Transit Custom</a> models can now be fitted with additional deadlocks, and other security features which are aimed at keeping thieves at bay. The locks can be fitted at the factory when the vans roll off the production line, or as an aftermarket accessory by a Ford dealer.A range of locks, designed and manufactured by <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/top-tips-and-accessories-to-keep-your-van-secure/n22715">van security</a> firm, TVL, are available as packs or individually. They include a wide range of external and internal locks which are resistant to picking, mortice locks and deadlocks which can’t be unlocked from inside the vehicle. A range of reinforcing mounts and shields provide additional protection against doors being forced open or locks being drilled.Unlike many other aftermarket security device manufacturers, TVL was involved in the development of both the Transit and latest Transit Custom  to ensure its technologies could be properly integrated. Similar kit will be available for the new Ford Transit Connect in the near future.The standard lock barrels can be replaced by anti-pick units which are compatible with the Transit and Transit Custom’s remote central locking. Secondary mortice locks, with straight or hook-shaped deadbolts, that can secure rear and side doors, are also available.The drilling of latches is among the most common methods of van break-in and TVL’s research suggests around half of all van break-in attempts happen in public areas during daylight, which requires the thief to act quickly. Company officials said it can take thieves as little as seven seconds to gain access to some vans.As a result, TVL has manufactured drill-resistant shields to protect latches, which are made from manganese – a metal which is notoriously difficult to drill. TVL’s Loomguard is a sleeve that is designed to offer protection to a vehicles’ wiring loom. Thieves wrongly believe that it’s possible to disable a van’s security system by cutting the loom through the gaps between the front and rear doors. The reality is that cutting the loom simply immobilises the entire vehicle, requires a section of the loom to be replaced, and potentially forces the van off the road for weeks.Other locks include an external mortice which provides a visual deterrent, and has been designed to resist attacks by levering it off; and a slam lock which secures the door as soon as it is closed. The Ford Transit is always in transit. The<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/sprinter/van/review/n18217"> Mercedes Sprinter</a> sprints. And, since its name was introduced in 1979, the<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/transporter/van/review/n18205"> Volkswagen Transporter</a> has transported.VW’s<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-medium-vans/n20726"> medium-sized van</a> has been around for a lot longer than 45 years of course, and such is the enthusiasm for it that a new version is more of an event than for many other models. It replaces the Transporter 6.1 and, pragmatically, is simply called the Transporter – with no confusing numbering to worry about.Like the electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id-buzz-cargo/van/review/n24958">Volkswagen ID Buzz Cargo</a>, the new Transporter should stand out from the crowd, although the official images shown here are of the Transporter Panamerica, a high-spec trim which is as-yet unconfirmed for the UK market. Similarly, pricing is yet to be confirmed, but it's likely to be similar to comparable Ford Transit Custom models, which start at around £34,000 (excl VAT).Alongside the Transporter will be a new <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/caravelle/mpv/review/n17332">Volkswagen Caravelle</a> MPV. This will be closely related to the Transporter, but will provide a more car-like experience. You can find out more about the new Caravelle below.

As with the closely-related Ford Transit Custom, the new Transporter and Caravelle will both be available with a range of diesel and<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/what-is-a-plug-in-hybrid-and-should-you-buy-one/n1141"> plug-in hybrid engines</a>, plus an all-electric version called the<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/abt-etransporter-61/van/review/n22641"> Volkswagen e-Transporter</a>. Diesel is likely to remain the most popular fuel choice among Transporter drivers, with 2.0-litre engines producing 108bhp, 148bhp or 168bhp. Both manual and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/automatic-gearboxes-everything-you-need-to-know/n17022">automatic gearboxes</a> will be offered, depending on the engine chosen, and buyers can select a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/4x4s-for-off-roading/n26188">four-wheel-drive</a> version of the 108bhp van, too.These will be joined by the VW Transporter eHybrid and Caravelle eHybrid – plug-in hybrid versions which are likely to share the same combination of 2.5-litre petrol engine and 11.8kWh battery as the Transit Custom. Under official figures, the Ford can travel on electric power alone for up to 35 miles, and it’s likely the Transporter eHybrid will provide similar figures.A number of electric versions will be available some time after the launch of the diesel and plug-in hybrid models. These will share a 64kWh battery, and provide power outputs of 134bhp, 215bhp and 282bhp, and a less powerful version with a smaller battery, designed for urban delivery, is also planned.Once again, VW is yet to reveal its own range figures, but the mechanically-identical Ford e-Transit Custom can travel up to 209 miles on a charge.Like the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/transit-custom/van/review/n18288">Ford Transit Custom</a> and<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/vivaro/van/review/n18281"> Vauxhall Vivaro</a>, the Transporter will be available as a panel van and crew van with an extra row of seats, but unlike the Ford, will also be offered as a dropside.While the Transporter has long majored on comfort as well as practicality, the new model has more cargo-carrying capacity than before. The standard model is longer (5050mm) and wider (2032mm) than the current version, and the wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels) is longer. The cargo area is 2602mm long, and there’s a greater gap between the rear-wheel housings, too. All that should make it easier to load Euro pallets into the 5.8m3 cargo area.

The standard-length model records a maximum payload of 1.33 tonnes, up from 1.28 tonnes of the most capable version in the current Transporter range. The Transporter is said to fit in standard-sized multi-storey car parks, and has a tight turning circle of 11.8 metres, which should make it wieldy in narrow streets.Long-wheelbase, high-roof versions of the panel van and crew van will be available, with a 400mm longer wheelbase and a near-one-metre increase in load compartment length. Here, total load capacity stands at 9.0m – enough space for three Euro pallets. Towing capacity increases from a maximum of 2500kg to a maximum of 2800kg, depending on engine.

As with other models produced as part of an agreement between Ford and Volkswagen, the Transit and Transporter look very different inside and out, and will have their own suspension settings, so are expected to offer their own driving experiences.The 2025 VW Transporter and Caravelle feature a 12in customisable digital instrument display alongside a 13in<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-car-infotainment-systems-tested-and-rated/n21269"> infotainment touchscreen</a> with DAB+,<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194"> Android Auto</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>. The tech is expected to be similar to the system in the<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id7/saloon/review/n26282"> VW ID 7</a> so we'd expect it to be responsive with crisp graphics, but possibly a little fiddly to use – although the van will feature some physical buttons which should boost usability.The gear selector is mounted on the steering column to free up leg room, and the hand brake has been replaced by a push-button parking brake. There are cupholders in the centre console, and further storage areas in the upper part of the dash panel.A storage tray in the centre console can house an optional wireless phone-charging device, and depending on the configuration of the van, there are up to seven USB-A, USB-C and 12V sockets. Buyers will be able to add an optional 230V/400W power hub, which can be paired with an inverter for a 2.3kW supply on plug-in hybrid versions. Diesel models have a 230V socket in the driver's seat frame, while plug-in hybrid and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-electric-vans/n21136">electric vans</a> can feature two more sockets in the back of the van to power devices ranging from laptops to circular saws.

Other standard features include LED front and rear lights, keyless start and rain-sensing wipers. Panel vans come with a bulkhead as standard. Wheels will range in size from 16in to 19in, and will be available with a diamond-cut finish.For the first time, the Transporter can be ordered with factory-fitted shelving. The equipment, designed by Sortimo, includes individual shelving parts which can be installed on both sides of the cargo area. In either case, the doors extend low into the rear bumper to reduce the height of the sill, making it easier to load cargo. The fuel filler flap remains at the foot of the van’s B-pillar, while on <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/plug-in-hybrid-cars/n22743">PHEV</a> versions the charging flap is beneath the right-hand headlight to make pulling up to a charger and plugging in easier.<hr /><h2 dir="ltr">New Volkswagen Caravelle revealed</h2>While the 2025 VW Caravelle will be mechanically identical to the Transporter, there are a raft of key changes inside. Chief of these is the seating layout. In European markets, the Caravelle can be chosen as a nine-seater, with three rows of three seats. However due to driving licence category restrictions, most models in the UK are likely to come with seven seats as standard.

The Caravelle will have more upmarket-feeling upholstery throughout, and will feature side and curtain airbags, plus a ten-speaker audio system. Whilst UK specifications are still to be confirmed, European models in mid-spec Life trim will also feature full body-coloured exterior styling, a height-adjustable driver’s seat with armrests and lumbar supports, additional USB ports for passengers and 16in alloy wheels.Caravelle Style models will add exterior chrome trim, shape-shifting Matrix LED headlights, privacy glass, 17in alloy wheels, leatherette upholstery, three-zone climate control and sunblinds in the second row.
