Citroen C4 gets clever gearbox

07 July 2006

Citroen's new six-speed automatic gearbox is now available in the C4 range from £15,890.

That buys a five-door 1.6 HDi 110hp SX, so the transmission adds £550 to the car's list price. The gearbox, which offers a fully automatic mode as well as the option of manual paddle shifts, is also available with the same engine in VTR Plus trim, and costs £16,490 for three-door and £16,890 for five-door models.

The gearbox improves combined fuel consumption by 6%, so the 1.6-litre diesel C4 returns an impressive 63mpg with the gearbox.

Peugeot will eventually also use the gearbox, but hasn't confirmed which models will benefit first or when.

The transmission can deal with a broad range of pulling power, so it can be used in a wide range of models from superminis to family cars, such as the C5.

Cashback deals currently on offer from Citroen cut the price of the C4 by £960. For a full run-down of these offers, and other deals available from other manufacturers, look in our deals section by clicking here.
