Citroen to show drop-top C5 at Frankfurt

20 August 2007

This C5 Airscape drop-top concept car will take centre stage on Citroen's stand at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Take a closer look, though, and you are seeing a thinly disguised version of the next Citroen C5 family car.

The concept shown here is a four-seater convertible powered by a 2.7 HDI V6 diesel with stop-start technology.

Equipment such as the air-conditioning and stereo are powered from energy recovered during braking.

The automatically folding roof has an integrated sunroof and is made from carbonfibre.

We haven't seen the interior yet, but Citroen promises a new-style fixed hub steering wheel, a bit like the one in the C4 Picasso, with all its buttons on the central hub.

Citroen also says the C5 Airscape will have lots of dark leather and chrome.

The production version is a four-door saloon, but will look very similar to this concept 'from the waistline down', according to Citroen.

The rival for the Ford Mondeo should make its show debut at next spring's Geneva motor show, with cars heading to the UK shortly after that.

Despite producing this Airscape concept, Citroen claims it has no immediate plans for a C5 convertible.
