This is a computer-generated image of the VW Passat coupe, which will go on sale next July.
The car is being launched to fill the gap between the Passat saloon and the luxurious Phaeton.
Engines will be taken from the sportier models in VW's line-up.
Petrol units include a 168bhp turbo- and supercharged 1.4-litre, a 197bhp 2.0-litre and a 247bhp 3.2-litre V6 that will come with four-wheel drive.
Diesel engines will include 2.0-litre units tuned to give 138bhp or 168bhp.
Insiders say the car incorporates several clever features, including a tailgate arrangement that allows the boot to hinge conventionally, while the glass opens separately.
The front end has been reworked to bring it in line with company styling, which will also be apparent on VW's other big launch of 2008, the Scirocco coupe.
The Passat coupe is expected to be shown in public for the first time at the Geneva motor show in March, before going on sale from an estimated £19,500 in July.
