This is the first image of the Ford Kuga, a 4x4 which will go on sale in spring 2008.

We'll see a preview production vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The Kuga is based on the Ford Iosis X concept car that was first seen at the Paris Motor Show in 2006.

Ford's chief designer for exteriors, Stefan Lamm, said: 'The Kuga is adventurous and distinctive.

'We believe there is a role for a more athletic and charismatic vehicle that marks a departure from the norm, in the same way the S-Max carved out new territory for an MPV.'

Ford Europe's executive design director, Martin Smith, added: 'Image-conscious customers for this kind of vehicle want a very individual car in which impressive on-road capability blends seamlessly with substantial off-road ability. The Kuga will stand out from the crowd.'
