Jeep may bring new 4x4 to UK

11 April 2006

  • Jeep could bring Patriot or Compass 4x4 to UK
  • Both models to tempt family buyers
  • Patriot has choice of 2.4 petrol or 2.0 diesel

Jeep Patriot

Jeep has unveiled its new Patriot 4x4 – the car goes on sale in the US at the end of this year and could also arrive in the UK.

The manufacturer is still deciding whether to bring the Patriot or another new 4x4 called the Compass to the UK. The Compass is a more road-orientated model, and was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show at the beginning of the year.

Patriots will have front- or standard four-wheel drive, but there will also be a four-wheel-drive version with lower gears for added off-road ability.

Powering all models will be a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 169bhp and 165lb ft of pulling power. Transmission options include a five-speed manual gearbox or a constantly variable transmission (CVT). There will also be a 2.0-litre diesel model for markets outside the US.

The options list makes pimping this ride distinctly possible: if you go for the top-trim stereo, it comes with speakers that swing down when the tailgate is opened.

The Patriot and Compass are part of Jeep's strategy to broaden its appeal away from relying exclusively on heavy, thirsty 4x4s and towards appealing to younger buyers and those with families.
